Show Aeeeal fire report Pleasant Grove's Volunteer Fire Dept. responded to 64 fires in 1985, 16 more than in the previous year, according to the annual fire report just released. Assistnt Fire Chief Frank Mills said that there were 17 structure fires last year, five more than in 1984. Twenty-six per cent of the total fires were structure fires, he noted. In addition there were 13 vehicle fires, for 20 per cent of the total, 26 grass and other fires for 40 per cent of the total. The remainder were hazardous condition calls, false alarms and standbys. Mills said there was one fire related death during the year as a result of a structure fire in Lindon. There was a death in an auto accident ac-cident where the car caught fire but this is listed as an automobile death under the Police Department statistics. It was also noted that property damage from fires totalled $376,000 which was less than the year before. Damage to structures totalled $243,000 with $100,000 of that attributed at-tributed to the structure fire in Lindon in which a lady lost her life. Damage to recreation vehicles and boats was $80,000 and there was $53,000 damage to automobiles by fire. Seven of these fires were on the freeway which is a totally new area for the Pleasant Grove Fire Dept. Mills explained that now that the Pleasant Grove Police Dept. handles Lindon's calls, the fire department now responds to auto fires on the freeway or in the restslops. The largest commercial fire loss was at Jim Danklef's Car Center where a fire was apparently set by arsonists. Damage there was $80,000. The department had 958 man hours of fire fighting, averaging 16 man hours per fire. There was an average of 10 firefighters at each fire. Chief Mills was especially pleased that the average response time was five minutes per fire. This is very good for a volunteer fire department, depart-ment, he said. False alarms for the year were down to only three which was an improvement over the previous year, Mills staled. In addition, there was only one gas and oil spill this year. Two firemen were injured in fighting fires this year, one received a broken shoulder and the other received bruises, both from falls. |
