Show Beverly Vogan receives special award in Washington Beverly Vogan, American Fork, received a special commemorative award at the La Leche League's 10th International Conference July 25-28 in Washington, D.C. The award recognized Mrs. Vogan's committment to helping her community through La Leche League's educational and personal outreaches. The international organization, now in it's 28th year, offers information in-formation and encouragement to those interested in breastfeeding. The Tri-City group has been serving American Fork, Pleasant Grove and Lehi for nine years, reaching over a thousand mothers in that time period. At the conference, it was noted that when La Leche League was formed less than 11 percent of new mothers were breastfeeding; now over 60 percent are nursing. "La Leche League is a prime example of the American Spirit in action," Margaret Heckler, Secretary of Health and Human Services, told conference participants. par-ticipants. Carl Anderson, deputy assistant to President Ronald Reagan, welcomed the delegates that came from every state and 13 countries. Special arrangements were made for the more than 2,000 children who accompanied their parents. More than 60,000 diapers were used during the conference. Mrs. Vogan said, "The most exciting ex-citing thing about the conference to me was the feeling of kinship and unity of purpose that permeated the atmosphere. It was exhilarating and inspiring." |
