Tanker dumps oil in Lindon A furnace oil truck driver escaped injury Wednesday afternoon when his brakes failed on the southbound Lindon offramp from 1-15 and the tractor and first trailer tipped over as he attempted to turn right. Officer Cody Cullimore of the Pleasant Grove-Lindon Police Dept. said that Rea W. Coulter, Salt Lake City, stated he was coming down the ramp when he tried to apply his brakes and nothing happened. The truck tipped onto its side and slid about 40 feet. The second trailer did not roll over but the hitch was twisted, Officer Cullimore noted. The tractor was owned by Clark Tank Lines of Salt Lake City. There was about $30,000 to $40,000 damage to the vehicle, the officer explained. The overturned tanker was loaded with No. 6 fuel oil headed for Geneva Steel's big furnaces. The officer said that about 5,000 gallons of the 7,500 gallons in the tanker drained out. Approximately 3,000 gallons went onto the road and into a cornfield on the south side of the road. The property is owned by Verl Cook of Provo. Equipment was used to dig a dike to hold the oil so that it did not run across the entire field. Another 2,000 gallons went directly into an irrigation ditch headed for Utah Lake, Officer Cullimore explained. They were able to get some of the oil out of the ditch but most of it is in a field north of Geneva Steel. It will be cleaned up by Geneva Rock Products who were hired to do the job. The officer said that the Utah County Health Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, Utah Division of Wild Life Resources, and the Utah High Patrol truck specialist all responded to this emergency. The UHP truck specialist said that the cold day helped slow the oil w hich was a benefit. Officer Cullimore expressed his thanks and appreciation to Sgt. Fillmore and Sgt. Ungritch of the ' Orem Police Department, all of the other officers who assisted, the Orem Ambulance and Orem Fire. Department who stood by. The accident occurred at 3:20 p.m. and the road was closed until 7:30 p.m., the officer added. |
