Show gophs 30-6 over Carton paced by an agressive defense n(j a balanced offensive attack, PC's sophomores posted a 30-6 win ver Carbon Thursday while the junior varsity won a shortened same M- pG scored on the round and through the air on the sunny fall afternoon. Paul Mattinson, returning retur-ning to action after missing a game ith a broken finger, raced 40 yards around the right end in the first period to put.PG on top 6-0. The extra point try could only be described as unusually lucky Quarterback Evan Thomas started left on the option, took a step up field and was hit. The Carbon tackier turned Thomas half-way around and with nothing to lose Thomas pitched the ball backward over his head into the Dino endzone Mattison alertly caught the ball in stride for the two points. Dave Beagley, a member of the chain crew remarked with a big smile, "they practiced that play all week." Scott Jensen to Mike Albrecht 'flea flicker' combination clicked in the second period for a 40 yard score. Jensen took a pitch from Thomas and fired a pass that was right on target and Albrecht out ran the Carbon safety to the goaline pylon. Vallen Blackburn sparked the next drive with some power running inside and Thomas passed to Carter and Jensen to move the ball to the Carbon three yard line just before halftime. A fumble into the Dino endzone stopped the drive. In the third period, Carey Secretan played a Carbon reverse perfectly and dropped the Dino ball carrier for a 12 yard loss. Carbon was forced to punt out of their- own endzone and PG defensive coach, Ray Fugal, committed 10 Vikings to the line in an attempt to block the punt. Cory Atkinson led a host of blue jerseys that blocked the punt out of the endzone for a safety. Following the safety, PCs Rick Mayo returned the kickoff to Carbons' 40 yard line. Cody Bell and Karl Aland made nice runs and Mattinson capped the drive from six yards out by taking a Shawn Young pitch around the right end. Young, who just returned to full speed after having his appendix out three weeks ago, then passed to Jensen for the two point conversion. PCs final score came after the Dino touchdown run late in the game. With :01 second remaining in the game, Young passed 40 yards to Korey Colyar. Jensen and Bell each had a pass interception for the young Vikings and Ramon Roberts recovered a Carbon fumble. In a shortened junior varsity game, Pleasant Grove shut out Carbon 14-0. The Carbon coaching staff requested the short game claiming not to have enough players. Actually Carbon used several juniors in the sophomore game. Shawn Jacobsen got the junior varsity on the scoreboard with a six yard scramble on a broken pass play and Deon Bezzant split the uprights with the first of two extra points. Stan Harvey stepped in front of a flat pass, caught the ball and sprinted down the sideline for a 40 yard touchdown. The teams played two 15 minute quarters.
