"We feel better about the future of Geneva because of the commitment President Reagan has now made," she stated, adding that although Coalition members now have "a good feeling" about prospects for Geneva, things are far from settled. "We still have a wait-and-see attitude," she stated. "We know that we're really depending on (President) Reagan now - on his integrity and ability to keep his commitments to Geneva and to our nation's steelmakers. We're very eager to see what's going to happen during the next 90 days." She explained during the 90 days, in order to stop illegal dumping of steel, the Administration is to draft voluntary agreements with all the nations that import steel into the United States. The success of the President's whole program depends to a large extent on how effective those voluntary agreements are and on how well they will be enforced, she said. "We're still going to do all we can in this," she stated, sayine that's why the meeting has been called. Mrs. Chipman said Coalition members have high praise for the . role played by Utah's Congressional delegation and by Governor r. Matheson in getting the President to make this commitment. "Howard Nielson has just been great," she stated. "The way he's come through proves that he is a true friend of Geneva and a true representative of Utah and of our district. We'd also like to thank Governor Matheson and Senators (Jake) Garn and (Orrin) Hatch and Congressman (Dan) Marriott for all they've done." |
