Show The extra point try was un- averaged 160 yards and 8 points per successful. game. PL Grove sophomores I take Lehi Pioneers 1 22-14 in "Mud Bowl" Pleasant Grove's sophomores broke an 8-8 halftime tie with two third period scores to down Lehi 22-14 22-14 in a "mud bowl" game Wednesday Wed-nesday on the Viking field. The Vikes went on top 8-0 in the first period when Paul Mattinson followed Brian Brandow and Chris Drake blocks in from five yards out to score standing up. Evan Thomas passed to Scott Jensen for two points to raise the score to 8-0. In the second period, Lehi scored on a long pass play. A Pleasant Grove defensive back batted the ball but an alert Pioneer grabbed the ball just- inches above the ground and stepped into the end zone. The two point effort was good and the 8-8 score held until halftime. During the third period, with the wind at their backs, PG pinned the Pioneers deep in Lehi territory and Thomas passed 20 yards to Jensen for the second Viking touchdown. Jensen made a fingertip catch in the end zone. At that point the northwest wind picked up and a blinding snow flurry set in. Going straight into the wind and snow, Lehi fumbled on the first play following the kickoff and PG's Warren Wakamatsu recovered the wet, muddy ball. Two plays later, Mattinson took an option pitch around the right side, made a nice cut back toward the middle and then darted across the goalline for six points. Shawn Young rifled a pass to a diving Jensen for two points and a 22-8 Viking lead. The snow storm stopped and the Vikes took their turn going into the wind. With 5:25 left to play, a Pioneer linebacker read a PG screen pass perfectly, picked off the ball and raced 55 yards down the sideline to score. The two point try was no good and the 22-14 score remained throughout the last five minutes of the game. The wet muddy field helped produce several turnovers by both teams. In addition to Wakamatsu, Jensen and Cary Secretan recovered fumbles for the Vikings while Cody Bell and Jensen had interceptions for P.G. Jensen had an outstanding game with a fumble recovery, two interceptions, in-terceptions, a catch for a touchdown and two catches good for four extra points. Defensively, Cory Atkinson, Vallen Blackburn, Rich Mayo, Karl Aland, Ricky Mayo, Secretan, Russ Johnson and the Viking defense kept the Pioneer offense outside the Viking 30 yard line throughout the game. PG plays at Spanish Fork tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the season's last sophomore game. |
