Show Thursday, November 3, 1983 - Page 1 " County's opaiGflnfhft ) Jllhambra Theater Ofiver' opens Nov. 18 0ljver!" the international hit usical is coming to the Alhambra Theatre for a five Playhouse eekend run from November 18 to Lember 17, with all the songs, all .characters, all the fun in a story joyful as the Christmas Season fJlf "Consider Yourself," "Where Love?", "Who Will Buy?", "Food nlorious Food", "I'd Do Anything", As Long As He Needs Me", are all kjt songs and international favorites. Pickens classic is also full of social comment: the squalor and abject poverty of the poor vs. the snobby aristocracy of the rich where neither side acknowledges the presence of the other; the cruel and power-hungr- government officials who are in charge of the nation's child labor force in the workhouses and use it to enrich their own petty lives. This all came to the attention of the British puhlic when Charles Dickens wrote his first successful serialized novel "Oliver Twist" in the 1830's. The people loved it and they took it to heart as they made it fheir watch-cr- y against the social structure and the poor working conditions of the day. Its popularlity has also made it a classic of modern literature. From that time it has had many incarnations as a stage play and two as a movie. Alec Guinness starred as Fagin and Anthony Newley was the Artful Dodger in the 1940s classic l, made by David I an. But it was not until HX50 that iJonel Bart wrote the hook, music and lyrics to the musical heartwarming version that all know and love, "Oliver!". Again Dickens-classi-swept the West F.nd, the. theatre district of Ixmdon, and plans were made for an American production. A Broadway hit followed. Then, in 1!K57, work began on the film version of the musical starring the original West End Fagin, Ron Moody, and Jack Wild who was one of the original boys in Fagin's gang in the West 'End production. "Oliver!" again became a blockbuster hit. It was directed and produced with style and class, with much attention paid to detail. It swept the Oscars in 19i9 winning six of the gold statues including Best Picture of the Year. The current production coming to the Alhambra is directed and choreographed by C. Michael Perry. Musical direction is by Kevin Parcher. The role of Fagin is played by James Lyon of BYTJ. Marchelle Duncan of Pleasant Grove plays Nancy. (Marchelle's father Clyde Weeks, Orem's Postmaster, plays Oliver's benefactor, Mr. Brownlow). Oliver is being played by two brothers from Spanish Fork on alternate nights, Ryan and Brad Nelson. Mike Wilson of Lehi plays the Artful Dodger. The evil Bill Sikes is portrayed by Dennis (larger of Orem. Keith Christonson of Pleasant Grove plays Mr. Bumble. Jan Webb is seen as Mrs. (Forney-An- Marie llairol'Orem plays Bet. Lynda Pate of Orem plays Mrs. Bed win. Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry are played by Brad Graff of Oreiii and Kendis Chase of IVovo. Charlotte SoworlxTry and Noah Claypole are played by Sally Young of Provo and David Markham of Orem. Thirty other cast members make up Fagin's gang and the singing and dancing ensemble. "Oliver!" will play at the Alhambra Playhouse Theatre every Friday, Saturday and Monday at 8 p.m. from November 18 through DecemlxT 17. Ticket prices on Fridays and Saturdays are $4.50 for special center section reserved seats. Released general seating in the rear center and side sections will be $5.50.
