Show Hospital observes 'Critical Care Nurses Week' Critical Care Nurses Week is being observed at the American Fork Hospital this week. Governor Scott M. Matheson has declared the week of September 16-23 16-23 as Utah Critical Care Nurses Week officials said. They commended the critical care nurses saying the patience, knowledge and expertise of these employees is often unrecognized, but many patients would not make it out of the hospital without the care given by them. The American Fork Hospital has a six bed Intensive Care Unit, with nurses on the unit a "special group of individuals dedicated to serving the patients entrusted to their care." One of the goals of the unit is to provide the best, most up-to-date care for each patient that is admitted. ad-mitted. Nurses on the unit have initiated a certification program to keep them current in specialty fields. There are 12 areas of certification, they said. The ICU nurses have received in-service in-service from Primary Children's Medical Center on intensive care of the pediatric patient, for instance. Teaching patients to know their disease and how to care for themselves when they return home is another primary goal of the ICU nurses. This is done, they say, on a one-to-one basis with the help of filmstrips, handouts and bedside teaching. Family members of the patient are included in the teaching program whenever possible so there is a joint, unified effort to help the patient return to good health and normal activity. r- |
