High in the south end zone, the new scoreboard read 38-8, but the game wasn't that close. Pleasant Grove was nearly as surprised as American Fork by the margin of victory in Friday's 3-A State semi-final game. While PG fans lingered on the field to savor the lopsided win, a good share of the AF "faithful" were headed south on 1-15 before the final gun sounded. From the first snap in Rice Stadium, the Vikings completely out played the favored and bigger Cavemen. Following Todd Jaspers 32 yard kick-off return, Curt Harrison raced 26 yards off the right side for a first down at the AF 27. Jason AUred carried for 15 and then 2 before Clark Hill kept for a yard. AUred added 4 more, Hill gained 5 and on the drives 7th play, Harrison lowered his head as he hit the line, but the expected blow never came and the PG fullback went the final 4 yards untouched. Hill's point after, the first of five, out of Darin Frampton's hold, gave the Vikes a 7-0 lead. "Too easy," a PG observer in the press box was overheard saying, "that was just to easy," he added. The Vikes braced for the expected Caveman offensive explosion. It never materialized. After short gains by Troy Hansen and David Holland, a Brock Knight pass split two AF receivers in the left flat and went straight into the arms of Craig Hilton, Viking cornerback. ' Hilton gathered in the ball and while the AF receivers were still running their patterns, he raced 55 yards down the sideline to score. It was quickly 14-0 when Hill kicked the p.a.t. The video replay of the game show's Mark Harvey coming on a . blitz from his linebacker spot and forcing Knight to release the ball before the AF quarterback wanted to and that's what caused the interception. Defensively the Vikes forced AF to punt on the next series but the ball got away from the PG receiver. It seemed to take the officials a long time to rule that Hilton recovered for PG but it didn't take the Vikes long to put the third touchdown on the board. Allred, who's running style and the artificial turf were made for each other, sprinted on runs of 15 and 25 yards with Hill gaining 10 in between. Harrison covered the final 5 yards and Hill added the point after to make the score 21-0 with time still showing in the first quarter. The only points of the second period came on a Hill 34 yard field goal that was set up by a 46 yard Hill to Hilton pass play. Leading 24-0, PG's Scott Walker kicked off to start the second half and on AF's second play, Leo Biggs stormed through to cause a fumble that linebacker Brent McAllister recovered on the AF's 26. Shaun Story, playing for Harrison who was injured on the last play of the first half, capped the short drive on a one yard run. Hill had carried twice for 21 yards to set up the score as the Caveman defense began to key on Allred. Harrison was hurt by Dave Holland who was flagged for a late hit as the half ended. It was the second 15 yard personal foul of the first half called on Holland. With PG now leading 31-0, the Cavemen mounted their only offensive drive. Holland, AF's outstanding fullback who unexplainedly carried the ball only three times in the entire game, broke loose for a 33 yard gain to set up the AF score. Holland did not touch the ball again. Troy Hansen capped the drive from 8 yards out and Knight added the two point play on a run-pass option following a fake extra point kick. What followed was a classic 17 play PG ball control drive that consumed over 8 minutes. Story and Allred took turns carrying the ball as Hill read to near perfection the option give or pitch. Allred scored the touchdown on a one yard plunge over the left side. It was midway through the fourth period before the Cavemen got to touch the ball. PG's defense refused to budge and a first down three yard gain was followed by two incomplete passes and then a punt. Amazing as it sounds, AF had the ball for only five offensive plays in the fourth period. On their next and final possession, Walker intercepted a Knight first down pass and then the Vikes began another drive. Kelly Sanderson, Story, Neil Peterson and Phil Cook took turns carrying the ball during the final eight minutes. On a fourth and 3 situation at the 26, PG lined up for a field goal but Hill rolled right and passed to Walker for the first down and the junior varsity took over. With the clock ticking off the final seconds, Coach Bluth sent in the wide eyed sophomores to run the final two plays. Statistically the game was as lopsided as the score. That fact is hard to explain considering AF knocked off three fine teams, Provo, West and Bear River in their three . previous three games. The Vikes had 377 yards offense with 269 coming from the smooth triple option running attack. Hill was 7 of 12 for 108 yards passing with no interceptions. AF gained 115 yards during the game with 91 rushing and 24 passing. Knight was 3 of 14 with two interceptions. Allred was the leading PG ball carrier with 97 yards on 15 carries. Hill had 58 yards in 9 tries and Harrison carried 6 times for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Story totaled 39 yards and Sanderson added 24. The Vikes had 22 first downs to 8 for the Cavemen. PG plays Provo tomorrow at 1:30 for the State 3-A Championship. One sports writer called this re-match as the "8th-overtime." He was referring to the 51-44, 7 overtime league game won by the Bulldogs. Provo reached the finals by beating a powerful Jordan team, 31-24, in Friday's first game. In that semi-final contest, Provo used power running by Fine Unga and Clarence Hoffiens to compliment the passing of Sean Covey. Tickets are available at both schools for tomorrows game. ?' - ; ff t s ' , 1 ': . '' - . ly "5ri I - ' - , - Kt ". 4 . ' , . ' 4 - 4 - LEO BIGGS tackles AF's Troy Hansen and jars the ball loose.
