Show pigh School Teacher Praises Scouting 0ij ;ditor: ate i One of the problems facing any city lands, crime. A fair share of that crime 11 felates to juveniles - young people. 'W.ast year Mark Johnson estimates TEL;iat 5 to 10 thousand of our tax dollars H-ent to fixing up things that were 'ycfotentially vandalized. Alpine School as district spent another bundle for 'damage. Chief Ferre is always thinking of ieas to help our young people and eep crime down. Recreation director lill Hoglund has a multitude of ecreation programs going to keep ids busy 13 months of the year. Our chools offer additional opportunities or students from K-100. All of these hings provide Pleasant Grove kids .mple opportunity for participation. However, year in and year out a irogram far more extensive than hese, goes on building young peoples ives and molding their character in feasant Grove. The program is the 5ov Scout of America. Last month irab ' they took the time to celebrate. Throughout the town banquets were held, cake auctions conducted, and awards were given to boys and men of all ages. From the Cub program, to Exploring, Ex-ploring, boys pledge their honor to God, country and others. They promise to do their very best. Boys stand taller as each of the twelve points of the scout law are etched in their minds and hearts. Every where you look scouts are not busy vandalizing. They're busy fixing things up, cleaning up, and contributing countless hours doing service projects that make life better in Pleasant Grove. It would be naive to think that scouts do no wrong. It would be ludicrous to think these boys would be better without scouting. Adult leaders give up their vacations and weekends to seek high adventure with their scouts. These adventures often do more than keep a boy busy. They teach him a lot about teamwork, this earth, and himself. These lessons often last a lifetime. Many a Pleasant Grove Scout could tell you of serving a fellow scout, skunking, gazing into the starlit heavens, or a thousand other things that give purpose to a boy's life. In fact, one man told me that scouting offers the best career education program in the world. Through the skill award and merit badge program, boys are exposed to a number of career options while walking the Eagle trail. While many dedicate their time, others shell out their dollars to become sustaining members. These folks are shrewd investors when you think about it. They realize that the "bucks" that go for scouting are like bread on the water. They helped build a stronger family, a more healthy city, state, and nation by building better boys. No wonder the communists take the time to hammer away at the worldwide scouting movement in their newspaper Pravada. The scouting movement is one of those things that keeps America and the world from falling like a rotten fruit into communist hands as Lenin and Marx predicted it would. No wonder many of Pleasant Groves finest have spent entire lives working for scouting. Scouters one and all -- Thank You. We salute you. We honor you and appreciate the good you do. Our families need you, our , city needs you, our boys need you. Wouldn't the world be a better place if all four billion of us took to heart what scouting has to teach: honor, brotherhood, loyalty, etc. etc. etc. By the way Chief Ferre, Director Hogland and Superintendent Welcker keep up the good work too.
