Playing right field, Wilson; pitching, Wilson; Wilson at first base; Wilson starting at short-- j stop," and so the announcement went at a recent City League softball game at Pleasant Grove's Shannon Field. The lineup, a life long dream of team sponsor, Clarence Wilson Jr., became a reality on July 13 in a game against Intermountain Gift. Actually, five generations of Wilsons participated. The oldest, Grandma Wilson at age 88, sat behind the home plate screen and cheered j while on the diamond, Clarence Wilson Sr., her son and a spry 71 years of age, started in right field, Third generation Clarence Jr., played shortstop and six of his fourth generation sons, Chad, Kevin, Lonnie, Quen, Jeff and Garth, plus son-in-la- Dennis Miller, rounded out the starting team. His memory gets a little fuzzy when asked about such things. In talking softball, Clarence speaks fondly of his 28 years of playing with Whitey Ratliff. As we examined the wall full of team and individual trophies that line one end of the Wilson gym, he said with a conviction that conveys his love affair with the game, "Softball has been good to me." Since he was 19, he has helped sponsor at least one team in the area he lived in and often teams a considerable distance from home. Before moving to Pleasant Grove in 1969, Clarence and his wife, Carole, lived in Salt Lake County where Clarence frequently played softball six nights a week. Some wives would raise strong objections if their husbands were gone that much, but Carole decided to join in rather than right the softball fever. "Carole was the ticket taker, score keeper, part time medic and baby tender at the ball park," Clarence says in a tone that conveys his appreciation for her patient attitude. In the 1960's, a team he played on and helped sponsor, Don Blair and Page Brake, won the state tournament five con-secutive years. Besides being a player, in 1958 Clarence was the assistant recreation director in Salt Lake County for softball and basketball. That recreation department periodically presents an award called the "John Bartholomew Award." This recognition went to Clarence in 1971 "for his outstanding teamwork and ability in furthering the sport of softball." Of the many trips he has taken to play in softball tour-naments, this year's championship win in the Caliente, Nevada tourney was the best. "That's the proudest I've been of a team for the way they played," says Clarence about the Wils Family first place finish. Other outstanding memories of softball include his being named to the 1977 National Invitational All-St- Team in Casey, Illinois, and seeing six of his seven sons play in the 1978 National Tourney in the same city. WhenPG, under Recreation Director Bill Hoglund, decided in 1972 to organize a fastpitch league, Clarence was one of the committee and of course sponsored a team. Since then he has sponsored at least one team each year and often several j ,'" ' "4 f V ' i f CLARENCE WILSON SR. relaxes in dugout with grandson, Charley I Baldrige.
