Show Freedom Festival Takes Flying Start The Utah Freedom Festival at Provo will take a high flying start this year as its annual Air Show spreads its wings Friday June 29 at Lowrey. The internationally in-ternationally honored team holds 11 national championships and four world championships. Each member of the group is an expert in such stunts as free fall gliding, linking, and formation flying. The jumpers fall at speeds of 120 to 180 miles an hour, sometimes from heights exceeding two miles. A Marine Harrier Vertical Jet, one of the most revolutionary achievements in flight, will also be on show in the skies above Provo, Lowrey says. The jet combines the maneuverability of a helicopter with the capabilites of a jet, lending unlimited flexibility to a variety of situations. Also featured in the show will be low-level aerobatic demonstrations demon-strations by Robert A. Hoover in twin engin Shrik and P-51 aircraft; aerobatics by Carolyn 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, Satur-day, June 30 at 1 p.m. at the Provo Airport. This is the first year the Air Show has been held on two consecutive days, according to Air Show chairman Lowell Lowrey. The extension is planned to accomodate ac-comodate the large crowds attending the popular event. Features performers in this year's show will be the Army's Golden Knights demonstration parachuting team and the Navy's Blue Angels aerobatic jet team. This is the first time these groups have appeared together at the Air Show. "Both groups asked to be invited to this year's Freedom Festival. We're very honored to have them here," Lowrey says. The Golden Knights were one of last year's most popular attractions, at-tractions, according to Salisbury in air craft; Frank Raunio's music accompanied J -30 Cub performance; Jim Raymond in an Omni and At-p6 and a p-51 Mustang, the Miss America of racing planes, flown by Howard Keefe. .Those attending the Air Show may win rides in the aircraft, according ac-cording to Lowrey. The gates to the show will open at 3 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday to allow visitors to explore the numerous aircraft displays from all branches of the military prior to the Air Show. F-16, F-14, F-3, F-l-11, F-3, and A-4 aircraft are planned for the display. The show will close at 9:30 both evenings. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children, children under six will be admitted free. Tickets are available at local Gsntruy 21 offices. |
