Show PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1978 THURSDAY OCTOBER s iptr Roundabout Raceway Going Strong, Races Last Saturday Are Among Best of the Year, Come Out In response to the several questions regarding the Spon soring of a Marathon Race during the Strawberry Davs Allen Longman star-ted in front position and ended there in the Stock Class trophy dash as he crossed the finish line first for the win. Marty West made a clean sweep again Saturday in the Modified A division as he took home all three trophies. Front Starting position proved lucky for Steve Turner in the Limited Class trophy Longman followed for 2nd, LeAlma Rhodes 3rd and Liz Willingham 4th. Steve Turner was in the right place at the right time to make it two out of three as he won the Limited main event. Bob Newman placed 2nd and Kim Gardner 3rd. With hard luck on Pete Campbells side putting him out of the race (he hit a wall) Kriss jumped Celebration to be held June 14-1- 1979. The race will be under the direction of Steve Shoell and be a 10 Kilometer (6.2 miles) and will be classified as a Mini Marathon. Steve has indicated the racing course will be set-u- p so as to cover the parade route. There will be a num-ber of classes for com-petitors to enter, as the activity is primarily to encourage the jogging and family par-ticipation aspect of jogging. There will be an Open Division for both Men . and Women, a Novice Division for both Men and Women along with several other classification such as separation as to age etc. Complete details will be anounced following the first of the year. Those interested in-dividuals should begin working out as it does take considerable training for a person to safely compete. In as much, as this type of activity attracts a number of outside participants, we en-courage local par-ticipation as much as possible. TROPHY QUEEN Carolyn Gurney pinns corsage on Cheryl Park, who was trophy queen last Saturday at Roundabout. HITS CEMENT Pete Campbell hit the cement last Saturday. dash as he put the pedal to the metal to take the win. Mike Strasburg did some hard driving and quick manuevering to take home the wins in the Modified B Class, Trophy dash and Heat, but Steve Hansen couldn't be outdone as he crossed first in the Main event. Kriss Sweat didn't make it to 'time - in" so he had to start each race in the rear. But he didn't stay there long as he took the lead early in the Teen Trophy Dash and stayed for the win. S With 8 super stock class cars showing up Saturday. Our gal Friday (Carolyn Gur-ney) really had to do some fancy driving to into the lead to win the Teen Class main event, Rod Mitani took 2nd. There were some really fast moving cars in the Super Stock Class and they were really a "sight to see", 6 out of the 8 cars were visitors to Round About and it took some far out driving to come into the checkered flag first, and thats just what Marty West did, Cliff Campbell tin a brand new car) placed 2nd and John Kunz 3rd. After watching several drivers go in and out (some in to stay) of the water hole at the West end of the track, Gerald Soetz went prepared in the Mechanics race. When he spun into the water he calmly got out his fishing pole and sat on top of the car fishing for the rest of the race. But J.P. Caliane had other ideas of what a mechanics race is all about. He did some really fancy driving and earned 1st place for his efforts. The Special event next week is another Councilman's race. Come on out and sup-port them. Bike winners this week were: Michelle Longman, Lisa Hall, Jason Brackenbury, Frank Powell, Darrin Giles, Travis Lindburg, Bobby Leonard, Steve Covington, Brian Car-son, Randy Mecham, Brett Longman, John Daily, Rhett Larson. The Wheelie contest was won by Kent Sweat. even get a chance at the trophy dash let alone win it, 3rd fastest time gave her out-sid- e pole position to start. When the starting flag was dropped she was in the lead before they reached Number 1 turn and she stayed there for the win. Steve Phelon (a rookie this year) really put the coals to it as he jumped in front early in the first Stock Heat race and try as they might no one could pass. No one knew who would end up in front in the second stock heat race, the front position can change several times in the 8 laps, but it was 'look out gang here comes Goetz" when Dick started to move there was no stopping him as he worked from back to front position to take the win. Fast thinking and quick moving was Bob Newman's Ace in the hole as he moved from back to front for the Limited Heat race win. It was look out here I come when Pete Cam-pbell saw his chance, and took it for the Teen Class Heat win. Most of the positions changed over and over in the Super Stock Heat race but front position only changed once as Marty West (in Pappas car) took the lead from J.R. Ridpath and stayed there for 1 1 laps to take home the trophy. With all of the Spin-ning, pushing, and sliding off the track there were only 6 out of 11 cars to finish the Stock Class Main event. When the checkered flag came down Dick Goetz was there to tke his second win for the day. Allen Rogers "I'm interested in winning to do something. Not just occupy a posi-tion."
