Show THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 1977 PLEASANTGROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 1977 Motional Piiystccd Education end Sport Week Is March 1 st to 7ih The Utah Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (UAHPER) is out to get all people on their feet during National Physical Education and Sport Week, March 1 - 7, 1977. While there's a growing awareness that physical ac-tivity is of vital importance to mental, physical and emotional health, UAHPER officials feel that most Utahns - particularly adults - have not accepted respon-sibility for their own beings. "We're beginning to get excellent programs into our schools now," explains Dr. Robert Leake, Physical Education and Recreation Specialist, Office of the Utah State Board of Education. "Physical education programs start in elementary school today, and the em-phasis is on developing ex-cellent movement skills for all children; finding and correc-ting motor difficulties at an early age. "Sequential physical education leads young people then into team sports; com-petition; lifetime sports. By the time they finish high school, most students should have integrated good physical education practices into their life styles. "During National Physical Education and Sport Week, we're trying to focus atten-tion on these new approaches to physical activity. We want better programs in the schools, but we re especially interested in making all people relaize that it's never too late to take on respon-sibility for their health and well-being- "Utah will participate in this week in several ways," explained James Ewers, UAHPER President. "Governor Scott Matheson will sign a proclamation declaring March 1 - 7 as "Physical Education and Sports Week in Utah." Ewers also explained that "Appropriate demonstrations and displays will be made to highlight the role regular physical activity can play on Utahns living the healthy ac-tive life." The win earned Huntsman the State championship. At 126 Kelly Beck placed second and also earned the "most pins in the shortest time" award. Kelly is also just a junior. In a battle of two state champions, Craig Walker, wrestling on an injured knee lost to the tourneys "Out-standing Wrestler", Scott Ruppe. Uintah's Ruppe won the state title three years in a row. Nathan Carroll placed second at 145 when he lost a 5-- 4 decision to Binghams Jody Jolley. Jolley got an early lead and successfully "stalled" for the win. The nights "heartbreaker" match was at 155. PGs Brian Storms was leading 9-- 5 over Uintahs Stacy Hall. With just two seconds left, Hall pinned Storms. Team finished season 21-- 0 Vikings Down Payson and Spanish Fork by Jack Hill In the last home appearan-ce of the year, PG bested Payson 74-5- 4 last Wed-nesday, extending the Viking won-los- s record to 20-0- . When was the last year PG won 20 games? Probably never! That's because high schools play more games now than at any other time. Back in 1961, Coach Don Crump's Vikings won won the Region and State with a 17-- 3 record. Winning 20 games in a season is no easy mark to achieve. Payson For the third time this year, Payson fell to the Vikings. PG controlled the tip, Tom Strasburg got the ball inside to Ray Walker who turned to shoot. Being double teamed, Walker fired a pass to Layne Butt for an easy two footer. Except for an early rally from Payson's fine left han-ded guard, Graig Buy's, the Vikes were never seriously threatened. Brad Bevan's Lions tried controling PGs torid running game by using a four-corn-offense, with Buy's as point guard. Buy's utilized a brilliant change of pace and reverse dribble to penetrate enough times to score 20 points durning the game. He couldn't do it alone. At PGs basket, Butt ended his home carrer with a fan-tastic display of shooting. He dropped 19 points in the first half and finished the game with 25. Coach Alfred's other seniors, Kirk Tanner, Kyle Secretan and Brent Keetch played well. To them must go credit for helping make this years squad so successful. By pushing the starters in prac-tice, plus giving great bench support, they have con-tributed in so many ways that do not show in the box score. State Tourney Pleasant Grove will begin State Tourney play, Tuesday, March 8th at 2:30 pm. Probable opponent will be Judge Memorial. This years tournament will be held at the University of Utah. Spanish fork Game Layne Butt scored 22 points in three quarters in leading Pleasant Grove over Spanish Fork Tuesday. The win was number 21 without a loss for P.G. this year. Spanish Fork attempted to slow the Viking offense but P.G. forced numerous tur-novers to take a 41-1- 1 lead at halftime. Ten of the 12 Viking players scored. It was P.G.'s third win over Mike Coomb's "Dons" this season. "y ' I .'fi; ' 1 f A7 I yj'y.- ;::y.-:;- , y I y; yy:: '.".yvl 'I .:';.;:f y"; .i:.::y:.:- .y''.
