Show THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1977 THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1977 Some Sour Notes Hit After Utah Game Not so. I was a Ute fan long before I knew there was a BYU. Coach Howards behavior toward his own players, the ball boy and officials is unex-cuseabl- However being upset at BYU's coach has some basis. (It does not justify his comments or behavior). I thought it was decidedly un-sportsmanlike to Wilson into the game simply to get a record. Some people have told me "why not" let Wilson get the record? Records are fine, but to get a poor team down and then kick them by getting a record is not good for football. What if Oklahoma had left their first team in against Utah the whole game just to get a record? They could have probably scored between 100 and 150 points.(The Sooners scored over thirty in the first quarter before pulling the starters.) Records should come in the natural course of Ihe game, not be something that is achieved against poor opposition at the cost of poor sportsmanship. College and high school rivialrys don't need hate. BYU putting Wilson into the game simply to get a record was poor taste but Wayne Howards actions were unex-cuseabl- SPORTS NOTES by Jack Hill In the five years of 3-- competition no Region Six football team has won a game with a team from Region Five. It was the same story again this year. Springville, Region Six first place winner was thumped by Ogden while Davis was clobbering American Fork. In a big sur-prise, Judge Memorial shut outTimpview. The first Region Six coach to beat a Region Five team will be an instant hero. BYU - UTAH A FOUL FINISH For the sixth straight time, BYU came away the winner in the annual football clash with Utah. The 38-- 8 win was spiced by a Marc Wilson NCAA single game passing record (571 yards, breaking Tony Adams record set against Utah back in 1972), a hot air ballon smashing over the end zone bleachers to be cut literally to ribbons on the goal post(but not before bending them to a crazy angle) and some foul, nasty and obscene gestures hurled at the BYU coaching staff by the Ute staff. Watching coaches sideline behavior is part of every foot-ball game I watch. Wayne Howard's performance was certainly won of the wildest ever witnessed. Through my binoculars I got a good view of the following antics. When num-ber 77, a big offensive tackle missed a block on a screen pass right in front of Howard, the coach nearly fell apart. A least three times he pounded 77 on the shoulder pads while verbally ripping him. From there, Howard direc-ted his frustrations to the of-ficials. When the flag went down against Utah, he would jump, throw his hands into the air, scream and run up and down the sideline. Late in the fourth quarter, after the cold wind had blown the ballon into the goal post, Howard happened to see one o the ball boys just outside of his team box who had put on a "Y" letter jacket to keep warm. Waving his arms, Howard sprinted at the ball boy, gave him a two handed shove while gesturing that he had better get out. When the bewildered ball boy lingered, Howard went after him again only to be restrained by one of his own Utah players. The ball boy then walked out to the wing official, talked briefly and then headed for safe ground on the other side. As the game was drawing to a close, Howard then directed his team to leave the field, which all the substutes did before the game was over. When the game ended, Howard made a beeline across the field to BYU coach LaVell Edwards. The conversation apparently was not pleasant with Howard doing the talking. Big Mekelle Arimia step in, took Howard by the arm and tried to cool him off. The Ute coach tried to tear away but Arimia wouldn't let him go until one of the Ute assistants came and led Howard toward Utah's dressing room. When they reached midfield, the assisstant turned and gave the Y coaches the "finger". Then the other assistant coaches from Uteville got into the act.Obscene gestures, signals to "come over here and lets fight" and in general behavior characteristic of total lack of moral character went on. . . as near as I could to tell, all coming from the Utes. All the major papers repor-ted Howard's post game remarks about "hate BYU and I'm going to foment it and in two years Utah will "stick BYU". If you have read this up to here you're probably saying "oh, he just a rabbid BYU fan. Fiiness Developed Through Vigorous Activity, Exercise Your doctor recognizes the importance of exercise to health. The American Medical Association points out that exercise, or lack of it, is often a significant factor in the control of obesity, diabetes, heart and circulatory problems, orthopedic problems and emotional Fitness developed through vigorous activity and exercise can be preventive, as well as therapeutic, in nature. In a positive sense, health includes abundant energy and vitality. A healthy person is physically fit when he can perform his daily work and tasks without undue fatigue, maintain adeiuate reserves of energy to ei.joy recreational activities and leisure, and meet the challenge of unexpected demands. These might be running to catch a train, quickly climbing several flights of stairs, shoveling snow, or jacking up the car to change a tire. Can you go up several flights of stairs without severe discomfort, chest pain, or having to stop before you reach the top? you would expect to be puffing a little at the top,, but this should subside in a few minutes if you are reasonably fit. The best exercise is doing something physically active which you enjoy, with the exercise aspect secondary. If you enjoy swimming or tennis, or handball, these are excellent sports for exercising most of the body. Golf is good for the tired businessman. Most of us find it difficult to exert the mental discipline to keep at a program of daily calisthenics purely for the sake of exercise. If you have had little or no exercise for years, be cautious about plunging immediately into active sports. Work up to strenuous exercise gradually. There are simple tests by which your doctor can determine the extent of your fitness. If you flunk the tests miserably - and many of us will - then ask your doctor to prescribe a simple, daily exercise program to help you get back in shape. Newspapers are the third largest employer among U.S. manufacturers behind only the automotive and steel industries. Last year, 382,700 persons were employed by all newspapers and 124,600 were women.
