Three one point decisions all went in favor of the Vikings. At 126 pounds, Kelly Beck gained an escape with just two seconds left in the match to win 8-- 7 over Spanish Forks' Mike Hales. Beck, suf-fering from a pulled hip muscle saved the victory with a stand up escape at the buz-zer. A pair of senior Dons, Gerald Garbe (105) and Joel Bradford (112) gave two P.G. sophomores some valuable experience. Both Vikings, Sonny Goodman and Tim Carter, received praise from Coach Henry for "battling their more experienced op-ponents and avoiding the pin." Brian Storms won big a t 167 with a 17-- 1 major decision over J. Allen Scott. At 185, Mark Ewell took early control, got in trouble as Ron Hansen had him in a AH Three . . . Vikings Win at Vernal Last Friday, Springville Tonight : ( J I .1 Ii , I I jT''" ' " I".' . ' - . " .r - : - - - - - Photo by Jim Walker by Jack Hill "We're going out to Vernal to play basketball and that's the only reason we're going", stated Coach Keith Allred as the bus left the PG high parking lot last Friday. That's just what the Vikings did in handing the Utes three losses; sophomore, J.V. and varsity. VARSITY PG hit on 30 of 49 field goal attempts. That's a blistering 61 percent. Guards Gary Jackson and Bret Frampton led the the double teaming defense that put the game out of reach in the first half, 38-1- Baskets by Jackson, Tom Strasburg and a three point play by Layne Butt gave PG a quick 9-- 2 lead. A Uintah time out was followed by a Gary Monsen outside shot and nice inside move and score from Rick Gardner, making the score 9-- 6 with 2:52 left in the first period. Butt hit the next five shots he took, soft jumpers from the top of the key, and with Ray Walker adding eight points in the second period, the Vikes posted a 24 point half-tim- e margin. PG hit on 27 of 34 free throws. That's an unusually high number considering the Vikes were doing the pressing. But Coach George Hughes sagging man to man defense sent Walker, to the line 10 times.
