I IIII I y'l I r f r4 fA rill m . - if ii riTiwnira riri-n) in. n il ....it.. ju . ftattMM EAGLES Dee Thornton, Garth Hansen, and Jeff Merrill 7 Scouts Get Eagle Badges In Ceremony Scouts jeceiving Eagle badges !n ceremonies held recently in Timpanogos District of the Boy Scouts of America were Allen Gates, Mike Frost, Jay Dee Nielson, Sam Freeman, Dee Thornton, Garth Hansen, and Jeff Merrill. Allen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arlen Gates. He enjoys hunting, camping, fishing, hiking, and reading. He has been Senior Patrol leader, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. Allen has been a member of the Pleasant Grove Junior High School band and this summer played with the Pleasant Grove High School band. Allen, 14, has lived on the East and West coasts of the U. S. and spent three years in Belgium. For his Eagle project, Allen made signs for the different dif-ferent camp sites at Anderson Park. The signs were of a rustic style with white lettering over dark stain. Jeff, 14, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Merrill. He is a ' member of the Pleasant Grove swim team, plays in the Pony League, and likes to fish, make flies for fishing, and has designed a computer game. He also enjoys electronics. Jeff plays clarinet in the Pleasant Grove High School Band and plays baritone-sax in the stage band. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow, has been assistant patrol leader, counselor in Deacon's Quorum and Teacher's Quorum. For his Eagle project, Jeff painted the porch and window frames at the Pleasant Grove City Library. Jay Dee, 14, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Nielsen. He is a football, baseball, hunting and fishing enthusiast. He has been president of the Deacon's Quorum, Senior patrol leader, counselor in Teacher's Quorum, and MIA and Priesthood chorister. For his Eagle project, Jay Dee painted and remodeled the closets at the church. Jay Dee is the last of six sons in the Nielsen family to receive EAGLE Allen Gates his Eagle award. His father received his Eagle in 1938, and his brothers Kenneth and Jim were awarded theirs in 1963, Mike in 1965 Gary, 1970 and Mark in 1971. Sam is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Ray Freeman. His hobbies include fishing, camping and all out door sports. He has served as a patrol leader. Sam is 13 and will be in the eighth grade at Pleasant Grove Junior High. He cleared bushes and trees at a hazardous intersection corner which blocked the view of oncoming traffic for his Eagle project. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thornton are the parents of Dee, aged 15. Dee likes to fish, hunt and do taxidermy. He has been secretary of his Teachers Quorum. He was given an award as outstanding scout in his troop at a week long camp. He painted stop sign poles in Pleasant Grove for his Eagle project. Garth, 14, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Hansen. He like to hunt and swim and would like to learn to ski. He has been Deacon's president and senior patrol leader. For his Eagle project, Garth worked at the State Training School in American Fork. Mike, 14, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Frost. His hobbies hob-bies and interests include skiing, golf, tennis, football, hunting, fishing, and building things. He has served as Deacon's Quorum president and senior patrol leader, and second counselor in the Teacher's Quorum.
