and the colorado river niver known as the arizona strip was vas explored by organized scouting parties between 1852 1856 they reported a I 1 large arge grazing area with very few areas sulta ble tor for irrigation most streams were dry except during flood season and cost of af maintaining ditches in the sandy country would be almost prohibitive spring areas ellier emerging ging irom from tributaries tributa ries of little creek and short creek are the principal values of the area prom from these sources water la Is piped to canaan short creek pipe springs cane beds and moccasin where eattle cattle are raised and vegetables vegetable sand and field crops are grown on an a small scale these settlements were founded by utah immigrants even though they now lie ile within the boundaries of arizona william hyde was granted the canyon and adjoining flats now called short creek back in 1859 IS 6 9 tor for a herd hilierd ground W B Ma maxwell twell built a house at the spring which rises near the mouth of the canyon during the winter of 1866 67 ll 11 ranch a ch headquarter sites were chosen at canaan and cane beds jn in 1868 in 1866 tour four men luen and a woman were killed by navajos cavajos and flutes and safety was sought in towns of the virgin river valley since 1866 these sites have been continuously occupied by farmers and stockmen stoc kmen who developed them into profitable ranches ten to twenty thousand cattle were rounded up in the fall and spring of each year between the great cattle days of 1900 and 1914 reports show that more than ca cattle atle we were run on the arizona strip by y tho the maxwell and grand canyon cattle companies after the decline of the cattle industry la in 1908 most old ranch sites have been converted into small scalf farms catered vat ered by irrigation ditches ditties and wells the surrounding range land supports cantio and sheep which supplements the irrigation farming today these natural resources support one family at canaan two at pipe wash and about seven at cane beds an irrigation system suitable of supporting about acres of 0 land was installed at short crek creek in 1914 to supply the needs for six to ight eight families there were five families there in 1930 between 1931 to 1935 ten families moved into the short t creek area thus over taxing its resources poverty and hardship caused about half of the new immigrants to move out CHAPTER springs lees ferry one of the most historic spots in northern arizona la Is pipe springs the Inilla indians ns called it matong batong meaning the end of a rock ridge it was waa a junction ot the trails leading from the virgin valley the kaibab plateau the parla paris river and long valley it was also a council ground for the it was first explored in 1856 by scouts working the country in and around colorado river and received its name in praise of gunlock bill who was william hamblin ile he at 30 paces shot the bottom out of a pipe without breaking its bowl james M whitmore selected the site for a ranch because of its abundance of pure water and plenty of good grassland in 1863 he lived in a dugout with the root roof made of bark and juniper poles in january 1866 he and his companion robert mcintyre were killed by indians indiana in an attempt to recover some stolen livestock after Whit mores death the property became the property of the church who saw its importance as a center tor for a large cattle industry and a point of strategic value in the colonization of lands in arizona about 1875 brought five families to live at pipe springs who wh 0 cultivated about 60 acres of land to safeguard the water supply and develop the adjacent ranges range tor for cattle bishop anson P winsor was instructed to build a fort in 1868 the tort fort was completed la in 1871 and connected by telegraph wires with and st george this enabled the colonists to give prompt warning of indian raids and thus summon help in addition to pipe aprin sprin springs 98 being a stronghold and ranch it also produced butter and cheese products of cows soon after bishop winsor left pipe springs in 1876 1875 the ownership passed from the church to private individuals it continued to be maintained as a ranch until 1923 when the spring and a few surrounding acres were des ignatee by the federal government as the pipe springs notional national monument the springs coming from the sandy floors ot of short qa canyon nyo i caused the settlement of moccasin tive five miles miles north 0 of pipe springs this site and water rights claimed by william B D maxwell were purchased by kale rhodes and woodruff Woo drutt alexander in 1864 through transfers this property finally went to the united order when the order disbanded in 1885 the holdings at moccasin went to the ownership of five heaton brothers in a later purchase the land went to jonathan heaton in 1893 clans were encouraged to estabill homes and raise livestock ing the time the th property tie be aged to the united order this experiment led to the establishment of the kaibab reservation zig square miles on which about 80 80 flutes farm and care for livestock ranking high among historic settlements of arizona and utah Is lees perry ferry on the colorado river john D lee in 1869 chose this as a homesite c constructed on ted dite ditches hes planted cited corn alfalfa and fruit trees an abundance of water was available from the paris paria this was the only feasible crossing of the colorado between needles california and amen river utah the river was crossed at this point by major powell fowell in 1870 in 1873 a boat capable of transporting horses wagons and equipment was constructed truc ted ty by joseph W young to missionaries appointed tor for the colorado mission to pass without difficulty once called lonely dell 11 lees ferry alter after 69 59 years of service servi eel has been abandoned in 1929 2929 navajo bridge was constructed near the
