county continued I 1 the following spring of 1866 crops were put in and they looked forward to a bounri ous harvest but again the frost came early in the tall fall and their crops were frozen this winter was not so hard as the former one but now they had to be ba on the look out to guard against indian attacks as aa chief walker had declared war on all whites from utah county to washington county every able bodied man 1111 had to carry a gun to protect the tha settlers A small tort fort was built at sanford just across the river from lowder or tebbs spring here some eight to a dozen men were stationed they took turns being at the tort fort in the winter of 1865 66 6 6 there was not so much snow enow but it was bitter cold it took much of the time to haul wood to keep the fires burning the spring of 1866 found the settlers busy plowing their ground and planting their crops but in may of that year indian depredations had become so bad that they were advised to abandon the settlement and move to io Paro carowan parowan Pa rowan wun paragonah Para gonah deaver beaver or other nearby settlements to help strengthen them the official abandonment according to jensens hensens Jen sens history of utah was in 1867 but the settlers left here in 1866 that year seems to have been a rainy season tor for the crops that they had planted matured they were not molested by indians or any other cause and when captain james andrus returned from his green river expedition he went to parowan carowan and reported the tine fine crops in panguitch Pan gultch valley some ot of the men came over to harvest them ithem during the winter of 1871 a call tor for resettlement was made and a notice was inserted in the deseret news asking all persons who were interested in the resettlement of panguitch Pan gultch to meet bishop george W sevy at the mouth of little creek canyon and in march they formed a company and came over to pan gultch they arrived here according to bishop allen alien millers journal on thursday march 16 1871 most of the company went vent into the fort but some moved out on the lots which had been surveyed and platted by one edward Dalto Dalton not of the first colony the town has had a slow but steady growth from that date farming was the chief industry by the re settlers who cleared more land dug canals by pick and shovel took care of the resources of the country by spreading out and taking up ranches and farms new canals were made on the east side aide ot of the river for the old ditch company now bast panguitch Pan gultch irrigation 6 tion company the long canal the east bench irrigation canal known then as the myers or cinch ditch taking in hundreds of acres of 0 rich farming lands while on the west side of the river the henrie brothers samuel and sames james had built a grist mill the mill race formed the beginning of what was known locally as aa the upper south ditch this ditch from time to time became enlarged and extended until all the water used in the tha south fields was put into the upper ditch the west ditch bovers all the land west of town and north as tar far as tho the old cleveland town about seven or eight I 1 miles north of gangu pangu Pan gultch itch the barton lefevre ditch which la Is taken out of the river on the west side about three miles north of panguitch Pan gultch covers all the lands approximately acres of farm and ana ranch land under cultivation ti CHAPTER xan hans P story of garfield county continued 3 2 the development of this valley has been slow but an ever increasing activity during the early seventies there was not too much invested in horses 1 sheep and cattle most of the animals were kept on the farms except for a few months grazing during the summer months the settlers pett lers cooperated jo together gether to care for their livestock during the summer most every family had a few cows a horse and some a few shep sheep the first what would be called a sizeable herd of cattle belonging to the henries hatches and marshalls marchalls Mar were brought into this valley from panaca nevada by two young men joseph S marshall and dannie henrie hearts arora this time on cattle and horse raising has become the leading industry here i A sawmill was built just above town at the mouth of the canyon the sevy and butlers brothers brothers bull built a sawmill at what was later known as the dodds ranch now hums burns tebbs ranch on the road to Pan gultch lake mis mm mill operated tor for years and furnished most of the lumber that went into the homes and
