Show the history of mining in utah at f aa IV h R 0 4 va 4 n P I 1 J j ge general n eral P E connor who became known as father of utah Af mining filing due to aid lie he gave to early prospecting EDITORS NOT NOTE this 1 Is the he fifth of is a lerlo t of 0 eight articles on the history of 0 the tbt metal mining industry lit in utah the important discoveries of gold cold silver copper lead and zinc did not come until t the ii e early sixties those who came to utah eagerly turned their attention to reclaiming the soil they were compelled to do this or perish and in doing so laid the foundation for an imperishable perishable le state prospecting in utah received its real impetus with the arrival of a regiment of soldiers from california under the command of general patrick E connor who founded fort douglas in 1862 general connors regiment was made up in california largely of men who had felt the lure of gold and he encouraged cou raged his men to prospect for metals during their spare time they scoured the hills and vales of utah but concentrated their attention on Bing bingham liam gulch where they discovered and panned gold first a gold camp Bing bingham liam later late became one of the great copper lead district 9 of the world the discoveries made n de by the soldiers attracted attention of c others and mining development progressed from then on As a result general connor became known as the father of mining in utah it was george P ogilvie who mado made the first lode discovery and filed the first claim in utah on october 17 1863 ogilvie who was hauling logs from bingham canyon came upon a nob of galena ho hei posted notice of his discovery and recorded the jordan claim in december 1865 the west mountain mining district was organized under the laws of california and from the district were shipped the fir first stores ores from the tha territory the sixth article in this series will appear soon in these colu columns |
