Show europe I 1 looks to U S farms for food asks increased production of farm products over 1941 record by L G ELLIOTT pre president ident 1 lasalle extension university NEW YORK CITY arsenal for the democracies Is the role which Is bing being enacted by the united states in the present world conflict the tar far flung industrial activity which has resulted has made itself felt in every section of the country and in ev every cry type of enterer enterprise ise so tar far the effect felt by the farmers has been principally the indirect result of increased purchasing power created by the upswing up swing in industrial production prospects for the immediate future however aie are that the american farmer will be called upon to contribute just as directly as do the makers today according to the department of agriculture estimates persons abroad will be dependent upon exports from the united states tor for their sustenance nane e in 1942 farmers will be asked to increase production in certain crops even beyond that of 1941 one of the most productive years in history with the exception of certain crops crop s such luch as cotton wheat and tobacco col which ww will continue to be curtailed bebau because s beof of large surpluses and loss dt df some a e important foreign markets mastt most m major ajor crops will be needed in larger quantities the leaders will be liv livestock stock dairy products eggs and vegetables the very products which have been adding most to the increased farm income of 1941 with the gains experienced during the first six months of this year and the estimated increase in farm income estimated tor for the last six m months the total farm income for or 1941 will exceed compared with only slightly more than for 1940 it is expected that present price levels will at least be maintained if not increased to some degree E even ven based on prices the increased production schedule will boost the farm income in 1942 to a higher figure than any year since 1920 dairy farmers have ben av erasing 20 per cent more income this year than a year ago and the goal tor for 1942 in this branch of 0 agriculture is a still further 8 per cent increase the schedule for or 1942 hog production is for better than 11 per cent increase over 1841 1941 or head as compared with the pigs slaughtered this year seventeen per cent more cattle are now on feed in preparation for the new increased markets it is not expected that the new demands tor for farm products will in the dislocations which are bothering some lines ot of manufacturing and some communities where manufacturers have had to curtail operations because of their inability to Ur secure certain raw materials the industrial picture as a whole is decidedly favorable the national trend is still upward and payrolls as well as production are steadily rising many industries such as al steel and machinery are not only operating at close to present capacity but are constantly adding new plants the effect of industrial prosperity Is felt directly to in the cities and the resultant better markets still further increase the demand tor for manufactured items as well as farm products at the present time approximately 20 per cents cent of the income received by all persons emanates from defense spending this now aggregates more than monthly and the next few months will see this increased to a still higher figure farm conditions improve I 1 salle map of business condition 1 ica al N I 1 for lober r L plans for increased farm production in au all major products except cotton wheat and tobacco cop which will lag due to surpluses and present lack jac k of market are prevalent over the entire country in the front rank will be livestock dairy products eggs and vegetables present chief sourer of farm income |
