Show addy 5 avelli J fla lytal MARV 6 BANNER B P i C r U KM THE PRAIRIE DOG spring had come I 1 so the prairie dogs were waking up and attending to their business they had had a fine winters nap in their holes in the ground they had a very big yard in the zo too which was filled with holes boles they are cousins causing of the woodchuck family and so BO they always have holes tor for their homes and they spend the winter in sleeping soundly just as every woodchuck does but the woodchucks are rather it bol 0 t dmn and sad whereas the prairie dogs are the most cheerful little animals imaginable yes ya the spring pad bad come and so had the baby prairie dogs they como come into the world in the springtime which la Is the nicest time of the year to them ive heard said papa prairie dog that some creatures in the zoo dont sleep leep all winter long Pan cyl they stay awake all the prairie dogs stopped to usten wagging their little tails and said bald in their barking voices fancy staying awake all winter too foolish for words so they use any more words in speaking about such foolishness 1 yes yea the bears continued papa prairie dog do not sleep during the the mot most cheerful little animals fintor in the zoo though they do it they tire are free in their forest homes they say that hint it la Is because they do not net get a chance li acce liere here to eat till all they want in tile the autumn so it will last them all winter in the zoo they are fed regularly and cant ent eat ahead of time but no matter what they might do in the zoo feeding us regularly or not li our family staying awake all winter winter the time of the year for slee sleeping plug not just the night time or part of the twenty four hours of t the duy day and night but the whole glorious sleepy time thile winter In imagine ingine us ua I 1 say staying awake all winter anil and the little dogs laughed you ever heard them laugh they look like guinea pigs ou on know but they are called dogs because they have funny little barking voices which sound very much like laughter and their tails are arc very quaint and funny and look just as though they were laughing at some extremely good joke in fact prairie dogs look as though they saw jokes backwards and forwards its going to rain said papa prairie dog a little later so it did I 1 it rained quite hard bard and the dirt became muddy but every prairie do dog g set to wort work with their front feet into the soft earth punching the mud with their noses end and fixing up their homes they all looked as though they had had mud baths right up to their ears they always work on rainy days because the ground Is soft then they do this out of the zoo too and in the zoo in fact their lives are about the same in captivity and freedom and thou though gh they are always so cheerful and merry still they never become pets nor do they ever become very tame no matter where they may be but oh what jolly times they do have among themselves |
