UTAH Soy Beans Furnish Shape of Egg Is Protein for Stock SICK 3 YEARS No Index to Sex WITHOUT BELIEF Are Superior to Cottonseed Poultry Breeder Must Rely By NEAL FITZALAN, in Radio World With the many circuit diagrams available today, some of which are very efficient and some of which are not, the layman gets confused when he starts out to get a circuit which is simple and still workable. The uninitiated may tackle the neutrodyne with assurance (along with of success. When this set is built on s lines it Is a charm. It is simple to neutralize and easy to operate. The neutrodyne has received some booing, but this came from the people who didnt take the pains to build the set properly, and also those who used poor and inefficient material. This set Is a cinch to log and settings dont change, except if you have a poorly Insulated antenna, when during the damp weather the insulators get wet and start to leak, thereby broadening the tuning and unstabiliz-inthe set also. All the neutroformers are wound seriatum on one form for the basket-weavtype. The panel of the set is the same ns that of the standard Neutrodyne, that Is, it has low-los- g low-los- s e vs I 21 cq o ! I oo Q Q Q q 0 the connection to the neutralizing con densers. The single winding on the aerial coll works very well, but a little more selectivity will be obtained by following the diagram, with the two windings separate. The coils are wound under two and over two." When the winding Is finished the coil may be raised about 1 Inch from the form and cord in serted in a wave form through the inside length of the winding and knotted for security, or the cord may be employed in any other fashion for support. The coils are removed from the form after this lacing Is completed. L1L2 is mounted on the baseboard at least 2 inches In back of Cl, the coils axes parallel to the baseboard (windings at right angles to baseboard). For this purpose two dowel sticks may be used, reinserted at two adjacent holes in r the winding, using two or brass right angles, secured to the baseboard and to the dowel sticks. LfL0 is mounted in the sdtne way. L3L4 Is mounted with its axis perpendicular to the baseboard, the more conventional fashion. Thus adjoining coils are at right angles to each other and magnetic Interplay is successfully avoided. Place all the instruments in their respective places, taking care that the IHT are all near their own sockets, so as to have very short leads, and thereby save some energy. The Wiring of the Set. Bring the beginning of the wire of LI to the antenna post of the terminal strip and the end of the coil (this being the primary) to the ground. Connect the beginning of the secondary coil 1.2 to the stationary plates of the condenser, Cl, to the grid post of the socket, and to one end of the neutralizing condenser, C2. the end of C2 going to the fifteenth-turtap on the coil, L4. The beginning of the coil, hi, goes to the plate post of t he first tube socket, the end of this coil going to 15 plus post (G7 volts) on the strip. The end of L2 goes to the rotary plates of the condenser and also to the negative side of the A battery, and to one end of amperite. If you desire to obtain volume and a bit less selectivity, connect the end of LI to L2. The beginning of L4 goes to the grid post of the second tube and also to the stationary plates of the condenser CM and also to one end of the neutralizing condenser, C6 (this is the second one), the end of L4 going to the rotary plates of C3 and to the end of the amperite which in turn goes to the A minus. The begin-- j nlng of 1.5 goes to the plate of the second tube and the end goes to the same place the end of L3 went to, that is the 15 plus G7 volts. Bring the end of the second neutralizing con-denser to the fifteenth turn of 16, the beginning of the coil goes to one post of C5 and also to the stationary plates of C4. Bring the end of the coil to the rotary plates of C4 and also to the post of the leak, and finally to the and post of the terminal strip. The left-of- f terminal of terthe grid leak goes to the left-of- f minal of the C5, which in turn goes to the grid post of the detector socket (the third tube). Note that all the amperites are placed in the negative lead of the A battery and the detector rheostat is placed in the negative lead, to same, the only difference here being that the grid return is put to the positive side of the low potential line instead of the negative as was done with all the grid returns of the other tubes. The C battery is Inserted in the F leads of the AFT xyhich go to the minus side of the C battery, the positive side of the C battery going to the switch, eventually to negative A hard-rubbe- ten-tur- n n o Vi O'1 ' I sip 1 lOQOOftOj nmm ' Diagram Showing Circuit Wiring Neutrodyne. of Low-Los- s the conventional three dials, one rheostat, a filament switch nnd the two jacks. Purchase of Parts. Three low-los- s fre- straight-lin- e quency condensers are used for tuning. The five sockets should be of the porcelain base type. The neutralizing condensers are variable from. 000013 to, .000019 mfd., and are very easy to adjust. The resistance across the grid and filament of the detector tube is a variable grid leak. The grid condenser Is a .00025 mfd. (mica). J1 is a double-circujack, and J2 a singlecircuit jack. Five UV201A tubes are battery. Pinkhams Vegetable Compound The past few years has seen a marked increase in the acreage and interest In the growing of soy beans. A national association of growers of soy beans has been organized and they are very actively engaged In popularizing the soy bean In the United States. The seed of the soy bean plant Is the richest In erode protein of all the seeds used In live stock feeding. The percentages of crude protein In soy beans Is 86.5 per cent and every 100 pounds of soy beans fed yields 33.2 pounds of digestible crude protein. The soy bean seed Is also rich in oil, as It contains 16.1 pounds of digestible fat in each 100 pounds of soy beans fed. Compared to linseed oil meal, soy beans contain 2.9 per cent more digestible crude protein and 9.4 per cent more digestible fat. ,Soy beans for dairy cattle are slightly superior to cottonseed cake. Care must be exercised in feeding Soy beans to dairy cattle, as excessive amounts cause soft butter. Cattle have been successfully fattened upon soy beans, and, when compared to cottonseed cake, the soybeans proved Just slightly Inferior to the cottonseed cake. In swine feeding, the composition of soy beans, as given above, should be carefully considered. The protein content indicates that it can be used as a protein supplement to carbonaceous grains. Due to its high oil content, soft pork Is apt to result, if soy bean3 are fed to any great extent. Soy beans should be ground for horses nnd cattle, but It Is not necessary In feeding sheep and pigs. B. W. Fairbanks, Extension Service, Colorado Agricultural College. (Prepared by the United State Department of Agriculture.) If you are one of the many who believe that the long, slim, beavy hen eggs are the ones which hatch out the male chicks, and that the smaller eggs are the ones which give birth to the future layers of the flock, you need to revise your opinion on the matter, says the United States DeYou may partment of Agriculture. as well leave your tape measure, scales, calipers, and other units at home when you go forth to purchase a setting of eggs from your poultry breeder, and rely solely on Mother deal in Nature to give you a fifty-fiftthe matter of sex. Can't Determine Sex. In answer to the continuous stream of inquiries pouring into the department office relative to determining the sex of the chick in the shell by the size, shape, or weight of the egg. the department says it just isnt being done. That is, not In a practical way, at least. The scientist is able to identify the sex of a chick in flie shell after seven or eight days of Iny cubation, however. Because of the important bearing on the practical aspects of the poultry Industry which the ability to select hatching eggs according to the sex desired would have, if such were possible, a number of Investigators have made studies concerning the situation in the domestic fowl. Recently Dr. M. A. Juli, poultry husbandman of the United States Department of Agriculture, completed some observations in which tye concludes that there Is no correlation between the length, shape, or weight of the egg and the sex of the chick hatched from It. lie has also made studies to determine whether or not there Is a correlation between the weight of the egg yolk and the sex of the chick, or between the yolk water-conteand sex ratio, with the same negative result. Number of Eggs Counts. It has been determined, however, says Doctor Juli, that the greater the number of eggs which a hen lays before being put into the breeding pen, the larger will be the proportion of females and the smaller the proportion of males produced by her eggs. The practical poultryman may be able to take advantage of this fact to some extent by making his selection of eggs for hatching with reference to the hens period of production. sex-rati- o Your medicine has Columbia, S. Foreign Clover Seed Is Found to Be Worthless During the last five years approximately twelve and million pounds cf Italian red clover seed has entered the United States from Italian ports. This seed is classed by tlie United States Department of Agriculture and the state experiment stations which have thoroughly tested it as no good. It Is not adapted to the production of clover in this country. Reports coming from experiment stations In Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Bennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, New York and several other states, present a body of Information which leads to several important conclusions.
