Show no depression in wall street t L Wai wailing liny Fi financiers financil nancie rs making makima more money aloney than ever G 0 P Is in bad way by EARL GODWIN ASHINGTON how much W washington are your clothes worth ill wager the average man who rids this column own more than worth of 0 clothes yet here as I 1 write this today I 1 am astounded over the advertisement in the wall street journal by an ordinary every day tailor who says that the new york wall streeter should have a wardrobe of clothes costing no less than there cant be much depression and economic ruin among any class of men whose tailors are figuring on worth of clothes per man new york Is the eastern focus of antipathy to roosevelt and wall street Is the particular poison pot whence comes most of the money which finances these noisemaking noise making devices in the way ol of various leagues and committees which fill the air and the press with the he wallings of the high priced high salaried executives who are making more money than they have made in years some of them making more money than they ever made before in their lives but yet want to defeat this administration wall streeters had descended to the point three and a half years ap ago where their favorite expression was wag that they tad had lost their shirts under the regime they had built supported financed and voted for most of them were given back their shirts by the roosevelt policies and they know it they have now recovered so they can be expected to have clothes worth for themselves while any new york newspaper carried almost dally daily all winter long advertisements of fur far coats running from to it takes a lot of business to have incomes like that this basic wardrobe for the average new york business man contains one dozen suits of ordinary everyday clothes with halt half a dozen suits of dress up clothes to wear around at evening functions there are a dog doe en overcoats fancy trousers and one unbelievable item is a suit of silk to wear at home while loain loafing there are different garments to in this wardrobe not including shoes shirts hats and underwear I 1 am glad such a high standard exists and that these wall streeters will be generous enough to want to hand some of this prosperity around instead of keeping it all united states bureau of labor statistics show that the average working man in america rarely spends more than thaia a hundred dollars a year all told on clothes the rural householder average more than seventy live five on his tile the contrast between what the average man has and what the well dressed new yorker considers a basic standard makes me wonder when these bawling brokers will quit their noisy attack on roosevelt and his weal wealth ali spreading new deal WALL STREET ADOPTS LANDON wall street has adopted gov alfred landon of kansas as its pet presidential candidate tile the reactionary east has given him the glamour of a great western Con collidge lidge a strong silent mart man with tremendous inner strength wall street wants london landon because it sees EPOS in him a nice easygoing middle grade politician who inho will go along with the gang responsible for his election I 1 take it too that tant his backers will see that he lg Is increasingly silent because when lie he has bas broken the silence recently he certainly has had nothing to say which would give any hint flint of presidential size they believe believe that lie he can be built up in the public mind as the sort of president we need but it if lie he gets many more questions like the teachers are shooting at him film which lie he refuses to answer in his silence he will lose more voters in tile the west than lie he attracts in the east the teachers organizations are sore at landon for its his habit of budget balancing by taking fating it out of the teach teachers erg pockets Is he in favor of doing this everywhere in the realm of public education they ask him but the silent man remains silent had he but remained silent all his political ife it might have been better because prying editors in his neighborhood dig up news reports of what landon was saying about the time that roosevelt was inaugurated lie ile saw tile the country going to rack and ruin with panic and fear and as the republican governor of kansas as he came out with the expressed hope that congress would give roosevelt extreme powers of dictatorship to cope with the disasters which had befallen the republic of course roosevelt did not ask tor for any such powers nor did ile he get them but it shows what strong silent landon would do or want to do it he got in a jam 0 NO KNOX PLAN the silence of alfred landon produces no more than the noise of col frank knox whose violent criticism of the new deal led roe me to believe be would come east with a plan to solve our problems frankly he has no DO plan all he says Is that the situation is terrible and must be studied knox does not attract people with that thal dull witted policy and the republicans public ans here who thought lit he was a tremendous figure are feeling slightly seasick I 1 meantime the republican national committee whose propagandists have been making tun fun of the so called brain trust has hired a brain trust of its own composed of 0 five professors three from harvard and two from yale tale to work out so some e high pressure intelligence for the 0 0 P which apparently Is beginning begioni ng to wake up to the fact that brains count after all 0 0 G 0 P IN BAD WAY so far the ordinarily smart G 0 P has not raised an issue the reason being that the republican party Is in a bad way with its most powerful vote getter borah on the rampage one trouble with the party Is 18 that the western agrarians arians are no longer going along with the eastern industrialists tria lists the G 0 P was made up op of those two widely separated wings and the western wing was always revolting and producing liberals nod and progressives progress ives yet trailing along after the leadership of the east but roosevelt attracted a tremendous number of those western liberals into his party and they appear to be staying roose belts main political job now Is to hold those wandering liberal republicans there Is where borah Is the key to the situation because he Is one of the few western agrarian leaders holding out against roosevelt it if borah bolts the republican party now or later on this year lie he will probably bolt right straight into the new deal that would probably mean a realignment of political parties making the democratic party the dominant party as in the days of jackson yet the republican leaders do not see this at all they keep on trying to make midwestern mid western landon who was almost a new dealer into a wall street tory and are saying that it if borah look out they will throw him out of the party entirely and it if they do throw borah out he will carry so much ot of the G 0 P with him that it will look as it if a cyclone had hit a hay lay barn THE TAXPAYER PAYS when you view the general inefficiency c ency of the average county courthouse the average city hall in contrast to tile the bang up up effi efficiency clency of modern business you are prone to take it for granted that government simply cannot compete with private industry when it cornea comes to clear cut methods 0 of getting things done well then multiply the local situation several million times and you have an idea ot of the duplication lost effort waste red tape and fatheaded fat headed stupidity that will grow up in a thin thing as big as the national government with headquarters at washington D DC C this general overgrowth of weeds Is responsible partly for the extra taxes you have to pay to uncle sam everybody knows it every politician yawps about it but nobody does anything to help it the new deals emergency organizations to take care of the hungry the jobless the broken down banks the distressed home owners the muddled agricultural situation of course added to tile the burden of government machinery here but now the party Is over the time Is at hand to clear up the mass and find out what should be saved and what should be scrapped what emergency organizations should be dropped what should be continued which ones should be merged into the regular government establishments to carry on indefinitely to determine teri ulue this the president appoints a trio of administrative experts the tha senate appoints a somewhat larger committee and the house expects to have its own group of efficiency experts they will all get together and frame a new dew governmental setup set up to be presented to the next nest congress this Is the beginning of the execution of 0 the new deals promise to reduce governmental expenses an and perfect administration difficulties IN WAY now heres a practical illustration of what an efficiency program will encounter there Is nothing so popular nor so well ordered as the CCO camps they have their worth in scores of ways only recently the boys of the flooded east and northeast moved into the strick stricken en areas and immediately took charge of tile the work assigned to them but tile the camps with young men cost vast sums of money and as an economy move tile the president orders the camps reduced in number and the enrollment reduced to Su OOOO immediately there Is a revolt in the democratic party in the house of representatives reduce the camps never erl 1 each one Is an asset to my congressional distri district ett 1 each one has its i thousands ands of friends they are good business they make money and give jobs all right says the president but some one must pay the bill are you willing to vote tor for a continuance of taxes high enough to pay these bills only congress can raise taxes only congress can spend money Is congress really sincere about reducing governmental expenditures will congress accept a reduction of governmental offices and departments the test Is about to come many another president has tried to reduce red tape here only small parts of their efforts have succeeded now comes roosevelt root evelt with the most comprehensive reduction plan ever put farward lie he can save billion it if congress and the politicians will let him and it if he does he ought to have au an extra niche in the hall ot of fame faine 0 4 union |
