Show farms of beryl district produce bounteous crops i i I 1 an agricultural inspection tour 0 of f the pump weir farms in the beryl bery 1 and newcastle district of western iron county was conducted on tues bues day of this week by county agent I 1 L E those who went on the tour from here were commissioner II 11 L adams and postmaster ivan decker and at our request the latter made the following story of what was found on the farms in that area the first place visited was the new leo led X knell 1161 farm north of newcastle A good pump well was in operation and another well is to be soon also a large reservoir is being built A nice field of potatoes was examined here but the plants were not too vigorous some alkali in the soil is the cause no doubt cyril partner resident farm er here had seven coyote hides one with the live coyote still inside inrid of it and he very friendly sev several eral other coyotes were seen d during u ring the day prospects good for trappers at the martin farm a pump well was throwing about gallons per minute and some fine alfalfa crops were being grown we were told here that the adjacent clark farms had two pump wells each throwing about 1000 gallons per minute when it is understood that through out the north newcastle and the be beryl districts nearly all the pumps are an operated by old car engines which seldom have the power needed the results are surprising the static water table varies from about 18 feet to about 40 feet in these districts Itric ts traveling west another stop was made at japanese bryl beryl here were some more fine potatoes and the finest field of cabbage that any of il us ever jawand ate this cabbage was sampled in the raw right on the patch and all agreed that it was sweet and tasty and needed no cooks embellishments to increase its palatability this was an unusual experience we were all so impressed with the cabbage that the proprietor pro preceded ceded to whack off a head cabbage for each elc excursionist arsion I 1 present these cabales were solid as rocks naturally a lot of iron county housewives will not be send ing to beryl for their cabbage another striking demonstration on abs tbs farm was the new barley field Brai brushed shed and broken up in may of this year and planted in june this field showed a thick heavy stand oi 01 headed out barley that any farmer could be proud of barring exceptionally tio nally early frosts this barley will in mature nicely despite the lateness of planting six or seven other farms throughout the beryl district were visited where fine crops of alfalfa corn barley and pasture combinations were seen some of these were new projects the land being chea cleared red broken and the wells being developed during this season toward noon the moyle farms were visited where pioneer parley moyle and his stalwart sons have made the desert blossom as the rose with some modern diesel power units attached some of the moye wells are throwing over 1200 gallons per minute and mountains of baled hay are stacked on these farms mrs mm moyle and her capable helpers rs served the group about 24 hungry desert rovers a delightful lunch on the moyle lawn if you ever v visit is the moyles you will never forget them they are real people after the lunch a consultation and explanation period was held during which mr explained that ever effort was being made to obtain through the proper channels electric power for the beryl pumps and power and lights for the beryl and newcastle homes it is honea that by another season the R E C will be operating in the beryl and newcastle districts if this materializes ia there will be no doubt one of the most marvelous developments that this part of the state has ever seen the new potato farm belonging to page knell was next visited these potatoes were apparently planted earlier than most and have now received their last watering As soon as they mature page will harvest and pay off his farm security loan manwaring hopes we borrowed a few of pages potatoes and traveled on to the bryant beacham well at the old lyman sevy place this well is operated by electric power and throws about 1000 gallons per minute mr beacham was extreme ly busy building his new potato pit and expects to fill er up the caravan then visited the W 11 leigh property near enterprise where acres is under intensive cultivation by the company nationwide nation wide growers of berti fied seed potatoes one hundred sixty acres of certified seed will be harvested this fall and apparently this will be the highest class certified seed malsed raised in utah this year it would surely be worth time to gyp some gas and make a trip to this property mr ermah explained that his company was con ducting extensive fertilizing experiments with this years crop accurate records are being kept fedt of the many different plots different fertilizers tili and combinations of fertilizers have been applied to different plots in most cases results are vis abaly evident to any observer vor when these plots are harvested the total crop from each plot will be weighed separately and some valuable information as to what results different types of fertilizer will produce in seed potatoes wll be available to farmers the fields are right now the most beautiful thing in the line of potatoes that I 1 have ever seen the total yield will probably stagger the imagination the soil of this leigh property is of exceptional quality and because of results obtained this year it Is likely that the co will establish itself here in the ine of grains an average yield of over 80 bushel of barley has been harvested on another acres of the property this year part of the crop w went ent over bushes per acre millard halterman sub leased this quarter section and got a total yield of bushels two electrically powered pump wells on the property throw out as I 1 remember well over 1200 gallons per minute each at least one of these wells has a lire life of feet A two row potato digger is on the ground and is is now being put in tiptop tip top shape for the big harvest it is a massive self propelled machine and the crop will be sacked as it travels over the fied it would be something to watch the last stop was as made at the andy winsor farm in the enterprise fields mr winsor has no reservoir water right he has a well of h his s own but use it all the time during the growing season yet last year he took off in cash crops from his 43 acres the average annual aniual gross income from this farm is is about this it would seem is the dream of the average small farmer mr Win sors main crops are potatoes and alfalfa he rotates these crops every three or four years some of his potatoes are certified seed and some arc for the general market mr winsor has been able to lo treat about a third of if his farm each year with barnyard manure this excursion was most enjoyable aside from the rich desert dust it t was surely most enlightening to see the agricultural possibilities that await development in the west end I 1 of if iron county |
