Show WHAT SHALL WE DO WITH OUR EXCESS DEER with the annual meeting of the big game board coming in less than a month and with all big game problems to come up for consideration at that time local sportsmen livestock men and others interested have been asked to get together and make a recommendation as to what shall be done with the excess deer in this locality that we have a deer problem is plain to all who are acquainted with conditions and most everyone agrees that we will have to cut the herd down if it is to survive it was a proven fact that there was a big loss among the deer population in our foothill area due to lack of feed this area includes the foothills from summit to beyond little creek checks made by arri employees plo of the forest and game department part ment merit showed these losses and also that the forage which supports the deer in this area was all but killed out by overgrazing deer got so poor toward spring that they could hardly get up a steep hillside according to one game 7 official this condition cant go on as it is plain to see that the deer heard is is too large for the limited winter range available the big game board knows this and will decide at the corning coming meeting how many deer will be taken off and how and when it will be done and we imagine that a becom emendation men dation from the local sports metes mens club and others interested will go a long way toward governing the boards decision provided provid eld of course that one recommendation is approved by all groups and submitted to the board the latter named group would about have to ignore us if more than one recommendation men dation went in and they showed the people from here to be divided in their feelings some people would remove up to one thousand head others are more j conservative and still others dont see the need for removing any at this time we feel that if permits were sold tor for the removal of not less than two hundred and not more than four hundred head at a special hunt following the regular hunting season in october that much would be accomplished toward solving the por blem we dont think that removal of many flany less than the above minimum M in the entire area would do much good nor do we feel that the figure should be set to the extreme mentioned vy b y some as this would reduce our deer herd to where it was 20 years ago but if something done to take off the excess number and let the range come back to where it will support those left in good shape nature will probably take care of the problem for us we mean that with the range in its present condition and with more deer than can be fed then to have a winter like that of 1936 we probably have to worry about any excess deer for awhile at least receipt books for sale at times office |
