Show MARKETING QUOTAS NECESSARY TO HANDLE 1941 WHEAT CROP during the th past 18 years farmers have produced about million more bushels of wheat than was a consumed in this country said J M palmer chairman of the iron iroll county AAA committee in pointing out that large supplies of wheat in the united states are expected to make marketing quotas necessary for handling the 1941 crop exports have furnished an outlet for much of the wheat produced above domestic he said but since the outbreak of the present war wheat exports have been almost entirely cut oft off by the blockade As a resu result it wheat has 6 piled up in this country un until til the total supply for the 1941 42 marketing year is expected to be nearly one and a quarter billion bushels this is almost enough wheat to meet this count rys needs for 2 years another factor that contributed to large wheat supplies is that the i average person in the united states eats less wheat than formerly in 1920 the consumption of wheat averaged 44 bushels per person while in 1940 it was 41 and only 37 bushels per person in 1939 although the population ha has increased the lower consumption per person has prevented pie vented any appreciable increase in in the total consumption of wheat pointed out mr palmer the fact that the domestic market is not able to absorb the wheat grown in this country coupled with the sharp curtailment of exports are factors for wheat growers to stu dy carefully before the marketing quota referendum on may 31 he advised |
