Show funeral services held for gordena gorden Gorde nW W mitchell very impressive funeral services were held thursday afternoon in the east ward chapel for gordon whitney mitchell 21 who died early monday in morning orning in atchison kansas while serving as a missionary for the L D S church in the central states mission influenza followed by a collapse of his heart was given as the cause of death gordon had been confined to his bed for about two weeks prior to his passing though his condition ergard ed as serious enough to have him removed to a hospital he complained about his heart acting in g strangely on sunday evening the doctor was summoned and after a complete examination he be left some medicine for him gordon seemed to feel better until about 2 a m when he again complained of his heart acting strangely the doctor was summoned again and stayed with him until about 3 a m when his heart beat was again normal he told elder howard F rollins kollins his missionary companion that he thought it advisable to move gordon to the hospital as soon as morning came and that he be would send an ambulance about 7 a in after afier his visit gordon seemed to rest easier until about a m when his companion said he missed a breath and was gone his body was accompanied home by elder rollins who was released from his mission a month early to bring his companion home the funeral services were under the direction of bishop W L adams and commenced by the combined choirs singing though Dp deepening ening trials under the direction of ivan decker with orna oma johnson at the piano the opening prayer was offered by simon A matheson after which the choir sang that beautiful land speakers were david L sargent president of the carowan parowan Pai Pa rowan stake elder howard F rollins gordons missionary companion and john H taylor member of the first council of seventies who represented thi th general church authorities musical numbers besides beides those by the choir included a duet by E ray lyman and mary 0 1 I cling to thee accompanied by mary lyman on the piano and a male quartet goin homo home by ray D l garner W clair rowley ormon R weight and ivan decker with itha at the piano alice richards read a tribute written by mrs laura Pa armore ani bishop adams offered a few closing remarks during which he be read messages of condolence to the bereaved family from the first presidency of the church from gordons mission president john F bowman and from elder gaylor whitney who left for the mission field with gordon the choir sang 1 I know that my redeemer lives as the closing I 1 song william C mitchell offered the closing prayer and at the aeme tery the grave was dedicated by walter C mitchell pall bearers were kenneth carlyle and boyd mitchell and james whitney cousins of the deceased and benson haycock and watson adams brother in laws the pro 1 fusion af ae beautiful flowers were I 1 i taken care of by young lady relatives stives and friends of the family j gordon a son of W scott and bertha whitney mitchell was born at parowan carowan on july 8 1919 and has lived here all hi his hs life he is a graduate of the parowan carowan high school I 1 and attended the B A C for one year where he was prominent inex in ex tra curricular cum cular activities and in student body government he was also an active worker in the auxiliary organizations of the east ward surviving him are his parents two brothers merton of parowan carowan and kent who at the present time lis is in the U S army stationed at fort lewis washington two sisters mrs benson haycock of provo and mrs watson adams of parowan carowan Pa rowan and two grand parents mr and I 1 mrs walter C mitchell of paro I 1 wan at the time of his death he had served four months of a two year mission for the L ix 13 S church in the central states I 1 |
