Show LDER alder ROWLEYS VIEWS PUBLISHED IN MINNESOTA elder morris rowley was given recognition recently by the little falls daily transcript in little falls minn which publishes under its heading opinions of others a very interesting discussion by elder rowley we reproduce the article artice herewith as follows christianity and every day lift life lifes greatest goal is happiness our very attitudes activities and oc ocafon aion can all be traced to tc our clr ow own n idea of what will make LIS as th the e happiest each individual nas his path to happiness well napped out thus there are as many roads to happiness as there are people in the world some of as believe it will come by obtaining money and what it will buy some that learning and culture comprise the road to happiness others believe that if the body I 1 is healthy elthy happiness will follow service spirituality friendship association and combination of these and other attributes constitute mans road to that great goal so eagerly each man woman and child pushes forward in his own way seeking his haven have of rest peace of soul and comfort of body and satisfaction for having lived so eager are we to realize our desires in life with the ultimate result happiness that we blendl blindly y disregard our fel and zealously push forward without consideration for others who are toiling upward too the working man for example is more inte interested reste d ii i 11 i the fruit of his labor than in the the he gives to ihs fihs employer he is desirous of having more of the comforts that his money can buy and at the same time having more time to enjoy them therefore through organized force he makes such desirous demands upon his employer the employer who is just as eager to have what money will buy will see to it if he can that his employed stays at his work as long as possible and deceives as little as possible fc his service in intensified forms these two evil conditions result in strikes and walkouts wal kouts labor disputes which always bring on suffering we ne need ed only to refer to statistics of 1936 37 to be convinced that millions have been caused to suffer because of such condi conditions conditto tio na labor trouble is one of the milder results of our selfish struggle for happiness sometimes men lose their sense of ethical value and the easy way becomes the best way it becomes easier to beg for money than earn I 1 it t easier to take money than work for it easier to swindle than to run legitimate business thus they lie cheat steal and finally kill to satisfy that desire for f or happiness A continued jo 0 o back page christianity A ANE N D EVERYDAY LIFE continued from first page horrible paradox but none alic thc l lass ess true ever since there have been institutions known as governments government selfish jealousies have existed among them desire on the part ot of one nation to have the commercial convenience the oil posses the seaports the farm land the timber lands or mining interests of another nation has been i the he cause if these possessions are arc brained obtained it will mean that ono ona nation is made more wealthy its people more comfortable and perhaps pern more happy but in prop proportion n I 1 some other nation n must suffer and it if war results both nations must suffer and all thor their connections and interests actually no one is made happy labor trouble crime and war bring about immorality this is a fourth great evil which we kiy trace to our blind desire f for or happiness 1111 p labor trouble brings about poverty more than one good young lady has been forced to im 1 morality because of poverty others are forced into imin unmoral oral environments viron ments beca because use of the station in life poverty places them in crime and immorality are almost inseparably connected war reduces the value of human life and integrity in the eyes of common citizens and in each case immoral conduct has increased and thrived with these three great evils existing labor trouble crime and war their child immorality will be present also today as never before we are in the grasp of these four great undermining forces nineteen thirty seven was the high point since the great war in labor trouble of all forms accordingly more people have suffered more people have gone without food clothing and other necessities that go to sustain life and make people happy because of such trouble since the war crime has increased not on only ly has the number of criminal cases gone up but the nature e of crime is becoming more dreadfully debasing to society it is common knowledge that the last hundred years has seen more inore money spent more homes ruined more nations reduced to poverty and more lives lost through the ravages of war than in any other like period in the history of the world As a product of these three menaces the moral stability of nations has rocked and started to crumble under the pressure brought to bear by the forces which cause joseph P F merrill makes a fine summary of the condition in the following words everywhere selfishness envy covetousness bitterness hate a desire to get more and more for less and less were and are in evidence demagogues and others ambitious for power and position employ honeyed words and mis mislead many selfishness is fanned into flame to get is the thing to get by whatever means are necessary honesty fairness justice are usually discarded factors it is unnecessary to mention specific cases everyone can recall them they involve rich and poor strong and weak alike men who direct the destiny of nations and formulate the rules of conduct of their people for years sensed the presence presen cc of these theae evils and in a studious manner put forth a long series of efforts to do away with these consuming elements they have built jails schools reformatories and many other types of institutions to keep crime out of society and to train people for proper conduct they have made laws to prevent both crime and labor disputes they have appointed committees mediation boards boards of arbitration relations boards and many 1 other devices to reduce labor disputes and prevent the unfortunate I 1 conditions resulting the world is littered with peace pacts world courts league of nations alliances disarla disarmament ment agreements and other institutions designed to procure and maintain peace educational cat ional medical institutions tut ions social workers mental institutions ins and hundreds of other I 1 uplift organizations have been introduced into society to help do away with immorality and sex crime everywhere we go we may see sec evidence of an untiring strenuous effort on the part of wen well mearing meaning individuals to cleanse and purify our society and put it on its rightful plain of f peace deac prosperity and cle cleanliness alliner S these ideals are also born of that desire for happiness there are then two great forces at work in the world now one ol of them is working with all its might to build society and ma make ke our world a glorious place m n which to live one of them is working with all its power fol foi the destruction of our society both are products of human endeavor and both results of that desire for happiness these forces are working in opposite directions it if there was a balance between the two it if a condition of equilibrium existed it if good was as prevalent and growing as fast as inese other things we have men i elined there would be no need lor immediate alarm but evil is increasing there is more laboi trouble more crime more war more immorality and the force for good is losing ground hatz hat malice envy and the rest are in in creasing daily fewer people would be born of the spirit of evil daily were it not so and these conditions would not be on the increase man with all his puny power is fighting a losing I 1 fight if conditions continue as they are society civilization will fall what then is the answer it if men with all their forces and an d facilities summoned and concentrated are com batting this evil unsuccessfully and if in the face of all the force man can muster these evils are indrea increasing sing and threatening society with these conditions a fact is there an answer when things of a mechanical nature are twisted out of shape by some unfortunate fortunate un condition and we have satisfied ourselves that they cannot be repaired if they are of value we send them to the factory or I 1 the h e maker to be straightened repaired or strengthened our society is a badly of machinery which the years have proven no man can repair so again we must turn to the manufacturer of this our society I our machine is twisted with selfish desires and broken by the result of this evil attitude warl war crime and the rest I 1 two thousand years ago the I 1 one who took dust of the earth and molded it and breathed life I 1 into it the one who made the foundation of society a living soul the maker came to earth in the flesh and gave us the solution to our every problem he gave it in such a simple way that we failed to recognize it as the remedy for such a gigantic problem he said it in three words love thy neighbor and love the lord these two laws fulfilled and obeyed are verily the answer for he is the maker and he knows the intricate workings of this machine love thy neighbor and labor trouble cannot exist f for or your neighbor is either your employer or employed emp loye love they neighbor and crime is done away with for crime clinic is is an assault upon your neighbor and a wound to all your fellow men love thy neigh neighbor bur and war will be abolished for nations are all neighbors to each other in such a society as this would be immorality could never have a place for immorality is a result of a misdirected misdirects d life through war crime and trouble none of which could exist if we love the lord our god with all our heart and our neighbor as bursell our seli sell this ali is is the only way M men have proven them themselves selves unequal al to the j problem the makers teachings ings in practical terms will change I 1 selfishness to unselfishness and our long desired goal of happiness can be realized elder morris rowley church of jesus christ of latter day saints |
