P St. St John said that this recreation vehicle management program is necessary to prevent prevent prevent pre pre- vent serious erosion problems resulting from recreation vehicle vehicle vehicle ve ve- hicle use to protect municipal municipal munir muni muni- r cipal watersheds and to reduce reduce reduce re re- re- re duce the conflict between hikers hikers hikers ers and recreation vehicle users E This action is a result of an ant intensive study of the problem on the Wasatch Front and t follows consultation in public meetings with interested citizens citizens citizens citi citi- zens recreation user groups and city county and state of of- MEMBERS OF the new newState newState newState State Recreation Vehicle Advisory Advisory Advisory Ad Ad- Council have also been consulted and they concur with the need for this type of partial partial partial par par- closure on the Front The map accompanying this release shows the roads and trails that will be open to recreation vehicles This in includes includes includes in- in all of the state and county highways and the Forest Forest Forest For For- est system roads plus the Mill D and Big Water Trails between Big Cottonwood Canyon Canyon Canyon Can Can- yon and Mill Creek the North Canyon to Mueller Park Trail and portions of the firebreak roads on the National Forest TRAILS IN the High Primitive areas of course remain remain remain re re- re- re main closed to vehicle use as they have been in the past This partial closure of Wasatch Front trails still leaves about miles of Wasatch National Forest trails open to recreation vehicle use Also there are more than miles of roads within Wasatch NF boundaries available available available avail avail- able to recreation vehicles users for access to their mountain mountain moun moun- tam tain lands THE LONE Peak area of the Wasatch and Uinta National National National Na Na- Forests has been given special attention in this pro pro- gram Because of the rugged peaks steep slopes and delicate delicate delicate deli deli- cate ecological relationships it has been determined that there should be no vehicle use in including including including in- in helicopters and snow- snow bobiles in this area The boundaries of this management management management man man- unit are shown on the attached maps THE FOREST Service recognizes recognizes recognizes that many people own and enjoy the use of some type of recreation vehicle The sport is growing rapidly and has a place in the total spectrum spectrum spectrum spec spec- trum of outdoor recreation However it must be coordinated ed with other land uses and values The program is an initial step in determining where major conflicts exist and where recreation vehicles can best be used ST. ST JOHN emphasized that this is a flexible closure order Open and closed trail designations designations designations nations can be changed according according according ac ac- ac- ac cording to management needs or as other trails may be constructed constructed constructed con con- or reconstructed to accommodate vehicle use and to allow for a rotation system of use The trails left open at this time may be closed at a later date to permit them to tobe tobe tobe be repaired while the use is diverted to other trails THIS recreation vehicle use restriction will not be implemented implemented implemented until the trails and non- non system roads which will be closed to motor vehicle use have been posted on t the h e ground prohibiting such travel The effective date will be announced in a few weeks after this posting has been completed Persons operating recreation vehicles in areas on National Forest lands not Op open opeti to such use may be prosecuted under either Federal or State law |
