Show how I 1 broke into the movies 4 copyright by hal C herman L by HOOT GIBSON ANI AM sorry borry that I 1 cannot relate ft a I 1 tale of hardships and privation but bat my entry into motion pictures was accomplished complis hed with comparative ease after I 1 de decided aided to work in them I 1 cant exactly say that I 1 broke into the movies it all seemed to happen systematically the ma vies seemed like an opportunity and when they opened their doors to me I 1 rode in im a native of 0 nebraska was born in the small but ambitious town of Te kamah which wits was smaller then than it Is now but it was large enough to please me when I 1 started life under the less fantastic name dame of edward and it gave me my education my ay education completed I 1 began to wander and inasmuch as the only thing I 1 knew anything about was waa ranch work I 1 wandered to different ra I 1 have been riding horses as far back as I 1 can remember and I 1 was as much at home in the saddle as on the ground gr nd being an adventurous youth I 1 began to try various difficult and daring feats of horsemanship and after plenty of 0 hard work and bumps I 1 got so I 1 could handle a horse well enough to get a job wrangling cattle which I 1 did for several years I 1 found the task of pursuing cattle over large and dusty prairies quite an unexciting employment so when I 1 met up with a traveling wild west show I 1 was overjoyed at the opportunity of joining it as one of the star trick and stunt riders it was known then as dick stanleys Stan leys congress ot of rough ough riders in 1911 1 entered the annual pendleton ore roundup round up as one of the ka 14 S hoot gibson contesting riders when the dust bad settled on the rodeo I 1 found my by self holding the allaround all around cowboy championship it was a touge job and I 1 worked hard to get it but I 1 kept right on riding for I 1 left with the american delegation gat lon of cow punchers for australia Austral lit I 1 rode in the foreign meets for or seven months about this time motion pictures were just beginning to show some signs of 0 development and after reaching this country again I 1 found myself caltia with motion picture producers they thel happened to have a field for western pictures so I 1 started directing apro program or short length westerns we sterns I 1 might have continued on this unpretentious status for tile the rest of mr career but seeing the opportunities in 19 the acting end of the gain garner I 1 decided to get into the grease paint and see what would develop I 1 had directed about 40 pictures and had a fair knowledge of what the industry wanted to in the line of western productions I 1 have always had what some people call a sense of humor and I 1 wanted to use it to advantage nd vantage if possible I 1 saw tremendous possibilities in milking mating westerns we sterns that went off the beit beaten tell path of melodramatic action pictures I 1 wanted anted to intersperse the exah exanie effit ed action of my pictures with colneda and human touches I 1 found a alree tor nd aj together we conspired to do comedy and human touches the re 6 suit was a better and more brand of pictures I 1 know of no other business cibere merit Is rewarded as it Is in As tl movies but merit must be hided by labor and plenty of it service |
