Show how I 1 broke into the movies copyright by hal C C herman by WILL ROGERS OW about this movie business and NOW how I 1 got my start to be honest about it I 1 yet got a real good start and tile the way I 1 figure things a fellow has to be a success before he goes lecturing and crowing about himself out here in hollywood they say youre not a success s unless you owe fifty thousand dollars to somebody have live five cars can develop temperament without notice or reason at all and been mixed up in tour four divorce cases and two breach of promise caca well as a success in hollywood ITA im a rank failure and I 1 guess im too old to learn new tracks and besides im pretty well off domestically speaking and aint yearning for a change now about how I 1 actually got started in this picture business mrs airs rex ilex beach was really the one who helped me set got started by selling the idea to sam goldwyn that he be ought to star me la in the movies sir mr goldwyn was connected with the eminent authors inc of which rex beach was president there were eight eminent authors in the outfit maybe where they got the name I 1 guess anyway sara signed me up cp and I 1 starred in a series of creel C reel comedy drapas dramas for him during 1921 and the outstanding picture ot of this group was jubilo Jub llo based on the theme of the song of that name I 1 also made doubling tor for romeo for this company it was the story of a coiN cowhand hand who went to sleep and dreamed he played rome borneo in shake immortal drama I 1 like my work in this oue one a lot but they had a sales convention at the studio and showed the him film to the gang gan although I 1 thought the picture was aery very funny the boys seemed to think different and will rogers 4 refused to laugh at the time I 1 was nearly heartbroken I 1 felt that I 1 was a flop and was about ready to quit pictures gosh it was awful I 1 writing much in those days although since then the papers seem to like my stuff and pay me for making wise cracks which make me a bit sore for recreation I 1 used to keep some horses and goats anthe lot back ot of the studio and I 1 spent most of my time enjoying the companionship of dumb but honest animals they laugh at me which was encouraging coura cou raging ing from goldwynn Gold I 1 went to work for hill hal roach and made a series of 2 reel comedies there its a serious business this making people laugh I 1 I 1 remember when I 1 was in the follies all I 1 did was my rope act acl and I 1 say nothing but tune one evening the manager asked me to make an announcement no and foolishly I 1 did and everybody laughed at me or with me and I 1 was a success and kept me talking or writing ever since what comes of falkl talking too and trying to help some on one e out now I 1 cant stop but wise cracks and picture work pay better than the rope act 0 and that saves my feelings a lot sam rork who produced A texas steer in which I 1 got the big comedy part of a congressman who was a texas cowman says he picked me out of all the hollywood actors because fill all the rest of them have morality clauses clause in their contracts and are afraid to act like congressmen nut but I 1 figured it out that its because I 1 was in the follies im an ex follies graduate and if barrymore had my legs he could still be on the stage but id been in the movies before I 1 signed up for A texas steer IYO ive been in more punkin seed movies and most of the job was handling the rope but that was a smart movie a comedy special they called it with real actors helping me out and all I 1 had to do was wag act the big comedy part of being a congressman On gressman a cinch any ADY day in the week any congressman ive known can give me a big laugh acting natural my aly advice to aspiring movie struck strack folk Is to buy a good 12 foot rope practice with it and then if you dont succeed why you can always stretch it over a nearby tree with one end around sour neck service |
