Show OUR EVENING EVENIN G STORY by THORNTON W BURGESS ado 0 ONE OND has hag much of anything to 11 do with rattles the kingfisher ile he and mrs rattles live their lives quite by themselves others of tile the little feathered people are very social and you often find them together many of them are close neighbors in the old orchard and when the time comes tor for the long journey to the faraway sunny gunny southland a great many of them journey together and the same thing la Is true when they come back in the spring but the rattles family Is not social mr and mrs rattles battles always are found by themselves and if the truth must be told they seem to prefer it that way now I 1 suspect that it Is partly because they want to be alone and partly because the other birds will have nothing to do with them and the reason that they will have nothing to do with rattles Is because they do not understood understand him in the first place he at all like other birds save that he wears a feathered coat and flies files ile he perches la in trees 1 4 mr far and mrs mr rattles rattle always are found by themselves but never walks or hops about on the ground yet he makes hla big home in the ground a tiling that no self re spec specking ting bird does save one other a cousin of skimmer the swallow pert little jenny wren the gossip of the old orchard happened to hear his rattle as he flew over the old orchard one day and it set bet her gossipy little tongue to going as only it can go there any tongue that can wag taster faster than that of jenny wren just hear that noisy fellow said she bile 1 I dont wonder he and mrs rattles want to live by themselves if I 1 had bad a voice like that I 1 would want to do the same tiling thing did you ever hear such a voice it awful ile he cant sing a single note and ive heard beard say that when he makes love to mra biro rattles he have it a single soft note blacky the crow has a harsh enough voice goodness knows but he can soften it when he wants to the same thing Is true of sammy jay ne ile screams most of the time but sometimes his voice Is really beautiful there must be something wrong with anyone whose voice Is always as hard as that of rattles and then too his head Is too big tor for his big body I 1 never could bear people with big heads but you will have to admit that rattles has a handsome coat even it if he a fine voice spoke up welcome robin with a sly wink to goldis the oriole you know jenny wren has a very sober coat a plain little brown coat jenny tossed her head and jerked her tall fine clothes never make fine people she snapped 1 I would rather have it a fine voice than a flue fine coat rattles has rather a good look ing coat though I 1 dont know as I 1 would call it handsome ue ile needs needa sor something good im told ills ids home smells something awful but what could you expect of anyone who lives in a hole in the ground and eats nothing but fish 1 I live in a hole in the ground and I 1 know a good many others who ho do the same game thin thing and let me tell you that our houses hous tire are as neat and clean and sweet its as those of people who live in holes in trees spoke up johnny chuck who had bad been listening tor for my part I 1 think rattles th the e ic kingfisher ang has more sense than some nor n e people p eo I 1 could mention it it Is true that he be makes his home in it a hole bole in the ground that Is all right tor for you yon folks who cannot fly retorted jenny wren sharply but for a bird bah I 1 it gives me the feeling that he Is only half balf bird and they say that he be makes his nest ot of fish bones I 1 did you ever hear of anything like that no self respecting bird will have anything to do with another who lives in a hole bole in the ground and uses fish bones for a nest rish fish bones think of 1 11 I dont know that that Is any worse than using mr blacksnakes Black snakes old clothes to lin line e a nest best with and that Is what aresty the flycatcher does said chatterer the red squirrel who had been listening certainly it Is snapped jenny wren and then think how bow the place smells I 1 and so jenny wren chattered cliatt ered on and on and the other birds said little but it was clear to johnny chuck that they agreed with jenny wren they like rattles the kingfisher and oil all because he live as they did 0 1932 byaw Burcos
