Show 1 CECIL ALTER GIVES information temperature variations there lias has always been more or less leas discussion luring curing cold spells of weather veather concerning the reported laria tlona in temperature in different parts ft tah valley whether it Is actually several degrees caldey cold cr out in the valley than up next to the foothills or whether part of 0 the tha difference is in tho thermometers u used ted has been debatable in 1929 M L gard local weather observer submitted the ques tion lion to J cecil alter meteorologist in charse charge of the weather bureau station in fit salt lake city and his reply Is rather enlightening we are publishing it as callows tal lows dear mr the average temperatures for or a month or a year do not vary greatly within distances ot of several miles at the same elevation higher in mountain oun stations may beaupre be appreciably calabi y different from a nearby catley station but estatio stations us at the same elevation with in five or ten miles or even 25 miles apart do not show much difference in the means of 0 the dally daily readings tor for each month and each year and during cloudy or windy weather the same is true tor for temperatures at any particular time say the lowest or the highest ot of the day they are all pretty much alike lor for stations in a general locality or or county especially at even approximately the same elevations but on clear quiet nights tho the minimum temperature may and usually does fall lower loer at places nearer the bottom of the valley as corn coar pared ed with stations nearer the foothills or an the slope of the valley and on clear quiet days the hig highest hept temperature in the afternoon la is likely to be a little higher over the flatter part of the valley than on the slope or foothill location so that the means tor for the month become more uniform minimum temperatures at eurof flee fice are often 5 to 10 degrees higher than I 1 at the airport 3 miles west on the flat country part of this is due to the smokiness of the city and the clear skies at the airport but it Is also due in part to the location of the city on the slope where the sir air does not come to rest like it does in the flat bottom of the valley we have a great many comments on this phenomenon but we havo have more from folks who are accepting the faulty readings of a cheap thermometer improperly exposed respectfully J cecil alter PT FT |
