Show beautiful cedar breaks where it is proposed to N make a J national park 0 sixteen miles south of P carowan parowan arkulan parks arks service se vice would take tak e big area at cedar breaks sixty nine square miles within the forest boundary sought brien rien head not included would affect cedar livestock interests more than parowan A national park at cedar breaks bilth w alth an area ol of eighty othree square miles Is the proposal of 0 the parks service according to reports which were verified at the forest office in cedar during the week though the area proposed would not include brien head point lit would extend east to the thick timber on the west side ot of hancock peak and into sage valley it would include tile the three creeks section the cedar canyon cattle district the six lakes section and the breaks area proper sixty nine square mills miles of the area which the park director has ambitions tor for would be within the he boundaries of the dixie national forest some of which is privately boned and fourteen miles would be outside those boundaries about five or six herds of sheep belonging belon gilg to carowan parowan Par on oil the forest with a like number owned by cedar city permit tees together with all the cattle permitted lit in cedar canyon would bo be affected since the park area would be reserved d strictly for recreational purposes tile the grazing and the timber resources would not be available privately owned lands within the boundaries would no doubt be purchased by the parks sc service rice the information co concerning the national parks services desires in the matter is contained in a recent letter front from director horace M atbright albright to the office of the forester in ill washington D C copy of 0 aleh which is on oil tile file in ill the cedar city office A map of the area is attached with will a proposal to discuss the transfer to the parks service when congress meets next winter just why the parks director asks roe fori the area mentioned who recommended it and why brien head was not included Is not known suspicions that the recommendation may have gone front from cedar city are dissipated with the knowledge that they are opposed to so large an area and that they would have included brien head point aside front from tiding up tip the grazing and timber resources the creation of a park with so large an area might affect materially the administration of 0 the forest service and no doubt would involve the issuance of a permit to every traveler over the cedar long valley highway and ana radowan canyon connection both L of f which would traverse the parks area and tile the collection of a fee ee as is done at the other national parks advantages resulting from the creation of 0 a park would include increased tourist travel to the section better developed highways and the pro proe clion lection of a large area of tile the cedar city water shed the attitude altitude of 0 the forest service toward tile the proposal has not been expressed |
