Show AWAKENED INTEREST BEING SHOWN IN COMING ELECTION with several other matters coming before the voters this fall in connection with the regular county election considerable interest Is deve developing lopini particularly among those who have political aspirations in addition to a full county ticket be elected la in november which includes two commissioners to succeed adams and sevy a clerk treasurer recorder sheriff actor ney assessor surveyor and a representative senta tive to the state legislature we have to select a state senator to succeed L N marsden from this district a congressman from our district and a supreme court judge from the state at large then of 0 course theres the county seat beat removal question to add zest to the local campaign there are constitutional amendments to be voted on possibly a bond issue for the proposed new court house and there Is some sentiment in tavor favor ot of submitting a matter concerning the hospital at the general election A month later we have to elect three school board members and as many members of 0 the hospital board so the interest which Is beginning to manliest manifest itself now Is likely to get pretty keen before it Is all over to discuss all these matters in one short article is out of 0 the question but brief reference to the probable lineup line up ot of local officers Is contemplated tem plated in this one As to nominees tor for congress in the first congressional district there Is no doubt that don B colton will again be the choice of the republican convention and a very formidable opponent for or whoever the democrats may nominate in this senatorial district which comprises com prizes washington iron and beaver counties the latter Is likely to lay claim to the nomination under a precedent which has alternated the office iron county now holds the office through senator I 1 marsden and county aleut leut ee nt david hirscht hirschl from the district since deaver beaver was cepres represented anted it beaver beaber should waive her turn no doubt senators madsden and hirschl would both be considered again but that seems seema hardly probable As a matter of tact fact representative geo jefferson of milford who wields the big biff stick in the republican party in the west end of beaver county is being considered tor for the nomination in some quarters and he has indicated at least that he Is in a receptive mood among the he democrats of the district who have been mentioned are J F tolton ot of beaver and charles B petty ot of cedar city no doubt others will be considered before the convention meets getting nearer home representative john S woodbury undoubtedly will be nominated by his party to succeed himself to date no democrat has been trotted out to oppose him As to commissioners there is a general feeling among republican politic ions falat adama and sevy will be nominated again though adams Is rumored to have said he Is not out tor for the office sevy will make no fight tor for it but friends teel feel that he will accept it he ts urged to myron D higbee former commissioner Is being quite prominently mentioned tor for the office which sevy holds the present incumbent occupies rather a unique position however in that he Is nominated and elected from the west end thus giving all sections of 0 the county reprise representation on the board theore continued to back page AWAKENING INTEREST BEING SHOWN IN COMING ELECTION I 1 continued from first co collma lurna at least mr air sevy bevy resides much of the ibe time in cedar mr higbee lacks this advantage and his nomination might prompt the object objection lo n ot of two commissioners from cedar E p E williams Is the holdover and none from the west wes t end there Is only silence from the democratic ranks as to these offices for the sheriffs office there are no announced candidates cond condi idalea dates baft buta a number are being mentioned none done of whom so BO tar far an aa we can learn have said they would not except the nomination mi nation among them are J T leigh the present incumbent J 11 II corry a former sheriff nat gardner and J B carpenter both of whom are experienced as peace beace officers grant walker former cedar city marshals name comes into discussion occasionally too but those who profess tornow to ehnow say that he would not consloe rit we hear moroni corry present city marshal in cedar mentioned as a poc cible democratic no nominee mirie R J shay the present county attorney states definitely that he is in not a candidate to succeed himself which probably leaves the field to ernest H burgess and J M foster since both of them affiliate with the republican party their fate will undoubtedly be decided in the primary both have supporters and neither has announced himself as a candidate hillman dalley dailey will be a candidate to succeed himself as assessor and surveyor and la Is not likely to be opposed in his own party the other party seems to have no aspirant to date for the three offices held here in parowan carowan Pa rowan it seems quite probable that the present incumbents will be candidates to succeed themselves though W clair rowley as clerk stated definitely whether or not lie he would like the nomination clair hulet as treasurer and kate taylor as recorder are both in a receptive mood we understand miss taylor Is the only democrat and the only woman holding office in the county another possible candidate tor for one or the other of these offices Is herbert haight of cedar city who has been mentioned and who has indicated that if the republicans see fit to nominate him he would consider it the rhe question of where the county seat la Is likely to be located after the election may have hare a bearing on his action however as it Is hardly probable that he would care tor for one of them it it meant moving up here for or the term of it the idea that all the officers may have to locate their offices at the county seat through operation ot of the law which says they must do so when the countes coun tys population exceeds eight thousand has been emphasized pha sized recently by editor A H rollo of the iron county record the possibility is too remote for serious consideration we believe the recent census gives us a population of only or less than the figure named in the statute requiring office at the county seat there la Is nothing to indicate that our population has increased since april when that census was completed and at the rate we have grown in the last ten years which was rather taster faster than most counties grew it will be six or seven years before we reach the mark granting that we should attain a population of before the next term for elected officers expires it is not likely that a special census would be taken to establish the fact or that any demand would be made for officers to move to the county seat the most that would be required we imagine is that they have a deputy in charge of an office at the county seat and already they have that except in case of the surveyor which is the least important of all so it seems that candidates for ottice office except the clerk treasurer and recorder who must have bare their offices at the court house regardless of the countes coun tys population might accept the nominations with reasonable certainty that they will not dot be required to establish residence at the county seat unless they choose to where the county seat will be after the election seems the biggest element of uncertainty at this time |
