Show OFFICIAL SIGNS PLACED I 1 ON STATE HIGHWAYS the state road commission has bat just completed the work of 0 placing the states standard road signs on the interstate highway through iron county the signing of this road commenced at the idaho line of north logan and thence L via brigham coty and salt lake and is being carried on to the arizona line southwest ot of st george a total distance of miles the signs used are such as have been accepted by the american association ot of state highway officials ficiala fici als and will be used on all interstate ter state routes throughout the country the advantage of having the signs uniform to motorists to traveling from state to state Is evident but an added factor in its favor is that important interstate ro routes utes will bear the same number throughout even though the route may be transcontinental in extent as U S 40 which extends from coast to coast via denver and salt lake east and west routes will all carry even numbers while those running north and south will be designated by odd numbers the route in utah just signed Is U S 91 it begins at great falls montana and extends south to a point near los angeles at a junction with U S 66 from the I 1 east as t the route marker Is a white shield bearing utah across the top and U S 91 below directional signs f iving distance d istance and direction to towns are rectangular shaped with black lettering on a white back ground as are also state and county line signs and physical feature sign which carry the names of canyons canyon rivers etc cautionary signs are ara of various shapes and carry black designs on yellow circular signs are used only so go indicate railroad crossings and bear an appropriate levice diamond shaped signs warn the motorist to use care on account of some condition inherent in the road itself as hill turn narrow bridge etc zones tor for hospitals and schools schoola a re e marked by square yellow signs an important improvement improvement not isable la in the erection of these signs Is the tact fact that except in cities where they mulat rou st be placed high enough to clear parked cars the signs are not more than three feet above the ground and are therefore are clearly discernible discernable discern able with the auto lights at night A word in regard to abe use and abuse of highway signs la Is quite in order they are intended to enable the traveller to get over the road in safety and without delay the most important highways la in 1 utah tah and in all other states will soon carry tills this system of uniform signing travelers from other r states and from other sections of utah will look tor for these signs in your locality it does not iok ok well from a standpoint of commux community spirit to have these signs brok en or defaces defaced by marksmen they cost money the taxpayers tax payers money and it takes time and effort to I 1 put them up every citizen all should on id be interested in seeing that those signs remain intact and that they have that protection pr 0 to which all property both public and private la is entitled |
