Show SOLDIER LETTER winston orton writes later sagging eating letter to parents T telling ell ling of experience detention camp camp mills new york july 16 1918 nor dear father and mother I 1 received your most moat welcome letter this morn ing was glad atad to learn that you were all well the V enclosed was a life saver for me but bat we will have 1 a I pay day soon boon I 1 am free as a bird now am ser serving as captain darks clark orderly and have a nice new motorcycle with a sidecar side car my duty con ailts of transporting the captain to his hia various places of duty I 1 hope to be so as to stay here and run the captains motor my company has gone over we were informed last night that we would not rejoin the company but would be to just juat where we are needed it is very warm here with a little rain two or three times a week have not been able to visit new york city as yet vet but hope to visit there next sunday I 1 I 1 will try and tell you about my trip from camp aou to long island which I 1 onder understand der stand is grandfather bayles birthplace we left camp lewis friday june at 10 00 a in the first stop was at spokane during the night and we did not see much of the city the fhe next was missoula mont we had a very nice time here the red led cross gave us alt all we could e eat t and a little to take with us net helena mont did wry very well here then bismark N D the red cross crosa was very good and kind here I 1 wil just hit the big places minneapolis we marched arched in all over the city it t was sure some walk and our feet were very sore when we pot at back to the cars cara arrived at madison wis at night so cant say MY anything about it drove into chicago just as the sun was rising it ie gum bare is wine some city we stayed here about two hours loura and took in the sights the captain being with us next toledo ohio the red cross cram was out to meet us ua they gave us wine eats and we went on our way feeling floe fine at cleveland 0 we marched up main st with the red cross cron the east BRA is certainly a beautiful country the people cant do too much for the soldier boys we pas paa aged aed through erie penn pena buffalo and rochester the same night we certainly would have liked to look them over at albany they would not allow us to leave the train at jersey cay new jersey we took the boat boa t for long island and here we are but how long we will remain I 1 do not know it if you are doing as aa well as I 1 am you are doing fine I 1 have all I 1 want to eat and plenty of sleep I 1 to go into the mess mesa room and help myself so you von wo see I 1 am getting quite a stand in with the cooks cooka the captain wants to go 90 down down to Hera hemstead stead and will finish when I 1 get back |
