Show ENLIST AND GO TO COLLEGE by P P claxton U S commissioner of education many a 1918 high school graduate is re debating with himself this year shall igo I 1 go to college or shell shall I 1 enlist at once for military serviced service eral 7 the war department has haa just made it possible to do both it says in effect to the ambitious young american you serve your country by going to college to make sure that you do not lose thereby the opportunity of serving ng your country in a direct military capacity you will if be asked to join the special U S army college training units that are to be formed you will be liable for service at a moments notice but because you are worth more to the nation with your college training than without it you will be expected to stay in college until called by the government the war departments an announce bounce ment provides that beginning with september 1918 military tiona under officers and non com coon d officer omeera of the army will be provided in every in institution s tit ution of college grade enrolling en for the instruction st one hundred or more able bodied students atu denta over the age of erg eighteen lateen the necessary military equipment will be provided by the government there will be crea created t ed a to military training unit in each in ution enlistment will be purely voluntary but all students atu denta over the age of eighteen will he be encouraged to enlist the enlistment will constitute the student a member of the army of the united states liable to active duty at the call of the president it will however be the policy of the government not to call the members odthe of the training units aits nits to active duty until the they Y have reached the age of twenty oi one is uless unless urgent military necessity compels an earlier call students under ode eighteen and therefore out not legally eligible for enlistment will be encouraged cou raged to enroll in the training units unit provision will be made for coor coordinating d met ing the reserve officers training corps corpa system which exists in about one third of the colie collegiate in institutions with this broader plan this new policy aims to lish a twofold two fold object the war department announces first 0 t develop as a great military outset the large body of young men in the colleges ril lege and second to prevent t un unnecessary y and wasteful depletion a of f the colleges through note nate volunteering by offering to the students a definite and immediate military status no nation has made such generous pl provision sn for combined military ana college education as has the united states in this thia new plan the youth who avail themselves of the privilege will be servi serving their heir country count rys imme immediate d is t a as we well as future needs |
