J Muir Elementary Elementary Elementary Ele Ele- School with a flag flying from a tall flag pole THE SCHOOL is named for a man who was ultra ultramodern ultramodern ultramodern modern in his views when he started the first high school in Bountiful In this high school under the direction of Leo J. J Muir a group of young students learned of the wonders of education they graduated from high school and went on to the University University University sity of Utah where some of them became teachers and later returned to Bountiful to teach in the Stoker School MANY OF these students had been pupils of Mr Muir when he was a principal and teacher in the Stoker school A school which has now been modernized and at which three generations of Bountiful Bountiful Bountiful Boun Boun- people have attended Later Mr 1 Muir was principal principal principal prin prin- cipal of the Bountiful Junior High school Hundreds of students learned to love him and to take advantage of his guidance WHEN WilEN HE liE WAS IVAS 40 years old he left Bountiful In the 43 years he was away from Bountiful he was president of an wrote and published many books was publisher of a newspaper worked i in church groups gave many public addresses locally and nationally as aswell aswell aswell well as taking part in civic activities When he was over 80 years of age he returned to Utah to live with a nephew and his wife Mr and Mrs George Muir in Salt Lake City He spent his remaining years working on two books which were not published at the time of his death FOR FOH MANY years the people people people peo peo- of Bountiful had talked of getting a school named for Mr Muir But it was not until the spring of 1967 that plans were definitely made to petition the Davis County board of education to toI get a school named for him I Members of the Just-A- Just I Mere club many of whom were students of Leo J J. J Muir prepared and circulated a petition which was signed by hundreds of former fonner students friends and residents of Bountiful Boun Boun- EARL SESSIONS a former student helped the club members members members mem mem- bers in circulating the petition Members and husbands of the club who helped were Mr and Mrs Stahle Wicker Mr and Mrs Horten Harten Fackrell Fackrell Fack- Fack I rell Mr and Mrs Leonard Day Mr and Mrs Murray Davis Mr and Mrs Alvin Sessions Mr and Mrs Everett Nelson Mrs Emily Eldredge Mrs Ella Smith Mrs Ida Westerman and Mrs Bertha Muir MR WICKER was chairman chairman chairman chair chair- man of the group and was delegated to meet with members members members mem mem- bers of the Davis County school board to present the petition When the decision was made to give a new school soon to be built the name Leo J. J Muir members of the club called on Mr Muir and informed him of the honor to be paid to him MR MH MUIR died in the summer summer summer sum sum- mer of 1967 shortly before ground was broken for the new school that would bear his name BOUNTIFUL residents will remember his beloved wife Ethel Malin Muir who was wasa a great help and inspiration to her husband Also their adopted son Steven Both of these family members pre- pre him in death Many people attended the dedicatory program and open house Monday Jan 27 Among the guests were state and local school people as well as public officials former students relatives and friends AN OIL p painting inting paid for by relatives and friends of Mr Muir was presented to the school Edward Muir a grandnephew grandnephew grandnephew grand- grand nephew made the presentation and gave a history of the life of Leo J.
