Show gdDnnng (dm Looking for something different to do this weekend? Here are a few suggestions, compiled by Park Record entertainment critic Rick Brough. Unless otherwise noted, events listed below will take place in Salt Lake MOVIES At the Blue Mouse: "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" stars Klaus Kinski as a demented explorer of the Amazon; The Second U.S. Erotic Film Festival is a collection of shorts (and briefs and pantyhose ...); Errol Morris takes a hilarious look at Middle America in "Vernon, Florida" (about a Southern small town) and "Gates of Heaven" (pet cemeteries); and Richard Farnsworth shines as the aging bandit in "The Grey Fox." The Mouse is at 260 East 100 South. The Fat Man, Sydney Greenstreet, continues at the Salt Lake City Library. In "The Woman in White" (Friday, Sept. 21) he has a ripely villainous role in this Gothic thriller adapted from a Wilkie Collins novel. It co-stars Gig Young, Agnes Moorehead, Eleanor Parker and Alexis Smith. It plays at 2 p.m. (for 25 cents) and 7 p.m. (for 50 cents). The Bogart Festival at the Utah Media Center continues with the all-time classic "Treasure of the Sierra Madre." Bogart, Tim Holt and Walter Huston play three on-the-bum Americans in Mexico who strike it rich as prospectors then are torn apart by greed. Director John Huston (W alter's son) has a cameo as a rich tourist and a young Robert Blake is the boy who sells Bogey a winning lottery ticket. It plays Sept. 21 (7 :30 p.m.), Sept. 22 (5:15 and 9:45 p.m.) and Sept. 23 (7:30 p.m.). The co-hit is "All About Eve," the talky, but charming 1950 comedy of an aging Broadway queen (Bette Davis) challenged by an outwardly-sweet scheming actress (Anne Baxter). It co-stars Gary Merrill, George Sanders, Thelma Ritter and the blonde who really succeeded Davis as reigning star Marilyn Monroe. It plays on Sept. 21 (9:45 p.m.), Sept. 22 (7:30 p.m.) and Sept. 23 5:15 and 9:45). The films play in the auditorium of the Salt Lake Arts Center, 20 South West Temple. General admission is $2.50, or $3.50 for the double feature. MUSIC The Utah State Fair winds up its music acts with T.G. Sheppard (Sept. 20), Freddy Fender (Sept. 21) and the "country Janis Joplin," Lacy J. Dalton, Sept. 22. The shows, at the Celebrity Grandstand, are at 6 :30 and 9:15. Admission is vour fair ticket. ($3.50 for adults and $1.50 for kids 6-16). The Utah Symphony, with conductor Charles Ketcham and solo pianist Michael Gurt, plays a program including Liszt and Prokofiev at Symphony Hall Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at 123 West South Temple. John Anderson, the 1983 Country Male Vocalist of the Year, presents a Sept. 21 concert at the Capitol Theatre, (50 West 200 South), with guest Karen Brooks. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets ($11.50 and$12.50 reserved) are available at Datatix, ZCMI, Tape Head, Jockey Records and Special Events Center. ,TTJie Mqrmon . Youth Symphony and Chorus performs a Sept. 22 concert at the Tabernacle. The program, including Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev, begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are not required, but admission is limited to those eight or over. Trolley Square Jazz series features the Kevin Johansen Trio and Vicki Veltri. The 8 p.m. program, on Sept. 22, will be broadcast live on KUERFM 90. The "Happy Together Tour 1984" brings four star acts of the Sixties to the Special Events Center at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24. Would you believe The Turtles (featuring Flo and Eddie), Gary Puckett, The Association and Spanky & Our Gang? Tickets ($6.50 and $8.50) are available at Datatix outlets, Tape Head, ZCMI, Special Events Center and Salt Palace. Yes, known for the song "Owner of a Lonely Heart," will appear at the Salt Palace at 8 p.m. Sept. 25. Reserved seats at $12 each are available at the Palace, Datatix outlets and Service to Service in Trolley Square. Commander Cody will appear at the Zephyr Club, 301 South West Temple Sept. 26 and 27. THEATRE The U of U's Pioneer Memorial Theater starts a season in merry style with Meredith Willson's "Music Man," the story of a music salesman (Robert Peterson) who doesn't know a note of music, a quirky, gullible Iowa town, and a librarian (Patricia Kies) who falls in love despite herself. Tickets range from $9.50 to $15.50. It plays nightly, except Sundays through Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. A Sept. 29 matinee is at 2 p.m. "Kiss Me Kate," Cole Porter's musical about a feuding couple playing Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew," plays at the Promised Valley Playhouse. It runs Wednesday-Saturdays through Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. A Sept. 22 matinee is at 2 p.m. The Playhouse is at 132 South State. "They're Playing Our Song," a musical about a composer-lyricist romance, is by Neil Simon, Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager, and plays at Theatre 138 (138 South Second East). It plays Thursday-Saturday through Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. ETCETERA On exhibit at the Kimball Art Center: photographs by Michael Lyon in the little Gallery through Sept. 27; paintings by Howard Post in the Main Gallery through Oct. 4. The Utah State Fair continues at North Temple and 10th West in Salt Lake Citv through Sept. 22. Big Top thrills are here with Ringling Brothers Bamum & Bailey Circus running Sept. 26 through Oct. 1 at the Salt Palace. Reserved-seat tickets ($6.50-$8.50) are available by phone, mail or in person at the Salt Palace and ZCMI. The Hansen Planetarium, 15 South State, presents "Cosmos: The Voyage to the Stars," with narration by Carl Sagan. It plays weekdays (11 a.m., 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m.), Saturdays (2, 4:30 and 7 p.m.) and Sunday (2 and 4:30 p.m.). Laserium, at Hansen, presents Pink Floyd in "Dark Side of the Moon. ' ' It plays Friday (8 :30 ), Saturday (3 and 8 :30 p. m. ) and Sunday (3 p.m.). General admission is $4, and $3 for children under 12seniors. This Saturday, the Hansen features children's shows: "Zoom a little Zoom" at 11 a.m. ; and the free show "Science Sorcery" at 11 :45. The International Festival at Triad Center Amphitheatre presents talented ethnic acts, as seen through the eyes of a bumbling English tourist (TV personality Craig Clyde). From Friday, plays nightly, except Sundays) through Sept. 29. The Triad Center is 300 West between North and South Temple. Snowbird hosts the Oktoberfest every weekend, up until Oct. 14. Enjoy genuine cuisine, zany contests, folk dancing and the music of Horst Fiedel and the Bavarians. The free festival takes place from noon to 6 p.m. |
