Show American Field Service appeals for support by Nan Chalat Park City High School student Joy Graddick just heard that she will be spending spend-ing the summer in Malaysia. Classmate Pam Finegan will be going to Chile, and Erin Bolton is packing for Portugal. Portu-gal. Fellow globetrotter Josselyn Neukom left for Kenya in January. Their travels have been made possible by the support of Park City's local chapter of the American Field Service. Ser-vice. This week the group will be asking the community com-munity for support. According to chapter member Amanda Peterson, over the last four years Park City has sent students to Canada, Thailand, Portugal, Ecuador, Greece, and Italy. The community has hosted exchange students from Sweden, Brazil, West Germany, Ger-many, Spain and Switzerland. Swit-zerland. "Our daughter Andrea went to Greece on the American Field Service exchange ex-change program and now we are hosting Ana who is from Spain. It really works both ways. The students grow and so do the host families. In fact, I think the whole community com-munity has benefited from its contact with Ana," said Peterson. For a local chapter to qualify as an active participant par-ticipant in the exchange program, the group must raise $975 to cover the national organization's cost of screening students and families. This year the Park City AFS chapter would like to raise additional funds to help students who are accepted accept-ed meet their travel costs. Members of the chapter will be going door to door asking for donations from citizens and businesses, said Peterson. "We will be looking for local sponsors to help some of our students make it to the countries they are assigned to," she said. AFS brings the world a little lit-tle closer to home and in such a small community as this it is an excellent opportunity oppor-tunity for our kids to go abroad," said Peterson. |
