Willett and his team defeated Kevin McLaughlin of Hamilton, Mont, by 19 minutes over the two-day race, sponsored by Glencoe Dog Food Co. Willett successfully defended de-fended his title from 1982. He said fresh snow made his 12 dogs have to "swim" through the deep powder. "It got really tough up near the pass, when I was in the lead, my team was having to break trail." That slowed the pace of the race considerably: Willett Wil-lett won in an hour more than last season. The race followed the Mirror Lake Highway into Wyoming where a night was spent. It was restarted and run in the opposite direction back to the original start Sunday. Results: 1. Doug Willett 2. Kevin McLaughlin 3. Ray Gordon 4. Rick Petura 5. Ron Kruczek 6. Bill Cotton 7.
