And Park City's Lloyd Stevens was well on his way to joining that fraternity (no offense, Lloyd). But that was before last weekend. On Sunday, Stevens became the first person ever to hit a hole in one at the new Nicklaus-designed Park Meadows Country Club golf course. And Stevens wasted little time in doing it. The course opened Saturday. His feat came on the 177-yard par-three 12th hole. Stevens, playing in a threesome with Dick Andrews and Larry Harding, decided to go with a seven-iron. "I usually hit a seven-iron about 160 yards," he reported. "But this hole slopes downhill." He said the ball landed about eight feet from the pin, took a couple of bounces, then rolled into the cup. "It was exciting," he said. "I jumped up in the air and did a little dance around the tee box." Stevens, who has been a steady golfer for about the past six years, said he has chipped in a couple of second shots on par-four holes before, but never anything like this. He said he was told at the pro shop that a small plaque would be made up commemorating the event. "I said I would be very honored to have Mr. Nicklaus present it to me when he comes to Park City," Stevens smiled. "They just chuckled and said, 'Well, maybe he will."' Stevens said he finished the round with a 41 on the back nine, 90 overall. He gives the impression that he plans to spend a few more days on the new, 7,341-yard course. "It's a beautiful, magnificent course," he enthused. "It's a great addition to Park City." |
