Kicks play short and lose to Orem soccer squad The Orem soccer team defeated a shorthanded Park City squad 3-1 Saturday in the Kicks' last home game of the fall season. Only nine of the Kicks managed to show up for the Oct. 19 game and they had to play two people short throughout. It was the third game of the fall season that the Kicks played shorthanded. Two of the games were losses and one was a tie. Nettie Franzen played goalie for the first time in her career. It was a position she said she was not completely com-pletely comfortable with playing. "We missed Nettie defensively. Roxanne (Toly) was forced to play defense, which hurt us offensively," said Steve Creer, the Kicks' new coach. "Orem's first and third goals came from Nettie's indecisiveness. But then she was playing a new position posi-tion one that's very difficult to play if you have never done it before." As though playing shorthanded was not enough of a handicap, the Kicks started the game with the wind and sun in their faces. They also had to run slightly uphill when on the attack. "We were concentrating on defense in the first half, just trying to keep the game tied," Creer said. "That's all we really could do, considering con-sidering the adversities we were facing." fac-ing." Park City managed to keep Orem out of the goal for the first 30 minutes of the first half. Orem scored when one of their players got loose with the ball to the right of goal. It appeared that she tried to center the ball, but the slow roller had just enough angle on it to catch the left goalpost and ricochet into the net. Orem boosted its lead to 2-0 two minutes later on a hard angle shot that just got by Franzen. The Kicks broke onto the scoreboard about 25 minutes into the second half on Toly's penalty kick about 25 yards front-left of goal. Her rising liner went through the hands of the goalie and tumbled into the net. . Orem closed out the scoring on a 2-1 break with two minutes left to the game. Creer praised the play of Toly, saying she dominated the middle of the field defensively and distributed the ball well. He also said the Dianes Spainhower and Glaser did more than their share of work defensively since being shorthanded shor-thanded forced them to cover extra ground. "Leslie Nielson improved 100 percent per-cent from previous play," Creer added. ad-ded. "She controlled the ball better and is learning how to use her body to keep opponents away from the ball." The Kicks have a bye this week. . Their next game will be Nov. 2 in Salt Lake City. |
