Show Utah Symphony to bring Kern classics to Deer Valley I The Utah Symphony, with guest conductor Norman Leyden, will salute Broadway songwriter Jerome Kern in a concert at Deer Valley July 13 at 6 p.m. Leyden is assistant conductor of the Oregon Symphony and music director of the Seattle Summer Pops Concerts. Soloists for the concert will be soprano Pamela LaSalle and baritone Craig Nim. Kern's 100th birthday was celebrated cele-brated Jan. 27. On that day he was commemorated on a first-class stamp. His songs have become standards, marked by their sophisticated sophisti-cated hummability, said a Symphony spokesman. . He composed dozens of tunes for Broadway productions. Conductor . Alec Wilder, in his 1972 study 7" h - V Norman Leyden "American i'opular bong," singled out Kern for exemplifying "the pure uncontrived melodic line more characteristically than any other writer of American theater music." Included in the Symphony's salutije will be "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "01' Man River," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "All the Things You Are" and "The Way You Look Tonight."
