Middle school essayists tackle national issues Summit County Commissioner Commis-sioner Ron Perry presented awards to the winners of the Treasure Mountain Middle School essay contest in a brief ceremony Monday morning. First place winner Carrie Rukavina received a framed copy of the Bill of Rights and a gift certificate to Dolly's Bookstore. Runnerup Heidi Frerichs also won a Dolly's gift certificate. Perry sponsored the contest con-test on behalf of the Summit County Democratic Party of which he is the chairman. Teachers at the middle school selected the topic, "Critical issues facing the United States and how students can become involved," in-volved," said Principal Brian Schiller. More than 100 eighth graders submitted essays which were judged by TMMS teachers , Don Johnson John-son (history) and Sue Wor-ley Wor-ley (English). The winning essay by Carrie Rukavina addressed America's in volvement in Lebanon, and Frerichs wrote about living in "The Age of Fear." Frerichs' essay suggested that American and Soviet leaders sit down and talk about their fears of nuclear destruction. "If we discussed dis-cussed our fears honestly maybe we could become allies," she said. |
