Show It's No Fun to Be Alone It's no fun to be alone. Mom's still at work and dad isn't around anymore. How many times has this been said or felt by our young people here in Park City? Probably a lot more than many of us realize or would like to think about. It is a fact, however, that there are children in Park City who live in one parent families who are in need of a special friend. Statistics show that children with only one parent are twice as likely to drop out of school than are children from two parent families. Children with one parent are also four times more frequently involved with police and juvenile authorities than are children from two-parent homes. Many of these children need the friendship and the positive role model of a " special someone" to help and guide them in their early years. This special someone in no way replaces the relationship of the parent to the child but rather supplements and supports this relationship. A Big BrotherBig Sister program could provide that special friend a child needs. Big BrothersBig Sisters is a private non-profit organization which matches adult volunteers with boys and girls 6 to 18 who are from single parent families. There is a strong growing interest here in Park City to bring such a program to our community but it can't happen unless there are people willing to volunteer their time and energy. The idea of Big BrothersBig Sisters in Park City can only become reality if everyone who is reading this and thinking to themselves what a fine idea this is shows their support. A meeting is scheduled for April 28, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. at Prospector Square Conference Center in the Coalition II room. Everyone is invited to attend and find out more about . Big BrothersBig Sisters and to contribute their input on the subject. If you cannot attend but would like to express your interest and support please contact Becky Townley, 649-7100 ext. 253 or Annie Bowman, 649-9461. |
