Show Editorial Antelope Park 7 Big 0 Milestone fi f i The big day has arrived Or at least it will next the Island Park Wednesday Jan 15 the new Antelope will officially be opened LOCAL RESIDENTS and many others throughout through through- out the state have been awaiting the day when the Great Salt Lake would be accessible with a white sandy beach and plenty of salt water The day is I here Now there are others who say Why would anyone want to go to that smelling foul-smelling spot We will have havet t to o put these into the category of no soul r rI i iFOR FOR THERE IS MUCH of yes beauty a somewhat bleak but beauty beauty none the less We predict I II it will soon be the routine o of f many to take I k a drive to the island in the evening and k sit at an overlook as the blazing sun dives behind f the hills They will return again and again to watch the glowing reds turn to clouds of gold Some have already found the area great for tubing t and for the snorting snowmobile Artists will discover j 1 new views to paint Children of all ages will search f the hills and beaches for animals The white sandy f t beach will attract thousands as they test the brine for fori fort J i t tt t u li l f YES THE ROAD through Syracuse will have f many more cars on it in future days Thousands will t enjoy an area known only to a few in ill past years f f While it is always dangerous to congratulate a ai al l i few someone few someone will be missed missed we we want to congratulate late several we feel have played key roles in the de de- r FIRST THE DAVIS County commissioners who had the courage and foresight to send draglines out into the frozen expanse just five years January ago 15 15 1964 and begin the road Some thought them mad as road crews worked 24 hours a day six days a week gouging mud from the flats But in a few months there was a base to work with l state entered th the picture finished d f fie l last sC I mile and quarter one-quarter to the island SECOND BILL HOLT of Syracuse Working on the Great Salt Lake Authority ano ana by himself he has built enthusiastic fires in rn many ny persons He travel to tor r the island many times daily and weekly He takes r groups He dreams dreams of plans yet uncharted l A third to be remembered here is Harold Tippetts He HeL L started on the work as Davis County planner Now N w directing activities in the Utah Parks and Recreation l unit he will be responsible for seeing the island park is operated properly THERE ARE MANY others but the above men are the ones who spear-headed spear the park Our thanks to them Now to those who will enjoy their work by visiting the island a word You will be stepping into the past in a sense The island is still much as it was when the valley was first settled Keep it that way Th That's ts t's part of its charm SECOND STAY on the land owned by the state There are 2000 acres of it while the remainder of the I island is privately owned Third dont don't litter Nothing will ruin the rustic wilderness faster than a bevy of beer cans FOURTH DONT DON'T try to haul the island home There are many interesting rocks etc But they wont won't be interesting if hauled away Fifth dont don't try to hunt This is a state park and fire firearms firearms firearms arms are not allowed SIXTH DO REMEMBER the rights of others to enjoy the solitude and open spaces Doing this will make this new park one of the highlights of Davis County I |
