Show Goose Season Should be Good Goose hunters should find plenty of geese when the Utah goose season opens Saturday, October 9, but unpredictable weather will influence movement of the flocks and hunter opportunites. After making an aerial survey of the state's waterfowl marshes along the Great Salt Lake, Tim Provan, waterfowl wildlife biologist for the Division of Wildlife Resources of the Utah Department of Natural Resources and Energy, reports a good number of geese in all areas. Provan indicates Utah's goose population had very good production this year and early goose hunting should be excellent. The unsettled weather is still influencing the movement of waterfowl and it is impossible to predict conditions for the goose opener on October 9, as birds are moving in and out of the marshes constantly, according to Provan. All the marshes have excellent water conditions, so once the weather settles down, there are plenty of areas to hold birds. Provan cautioned waterfowl hunters that, should the weather continue to be wet, caution should be used in many hunting areas when parking vehicles. Enough high ground is saturated with water and many off-road areas will become mud traps for unsuspecting drivers.
